Why NIN is so powerful
    #3048506 - 08/25/04 12:28 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

i think a big reason that nine inch nails is so powerful is because a lot of reznor's songs are just the right tempo to march to.

just a thought

TOOL's "The Patient" is at that perfect marching rhythm.

i find the most Powerful music to be at just the right tempo to Breathe with.

just another thought.

i dont know about the rest of NIN but 'the downward spira'l has some really intense tracks

in 'the becoming' he makes a melody out of people screaming, and the contrast with that sweet dreamy acoustic part is perfect.

reznor definately puts alot of feeling into the percussion on that album as well. it does sound like war-marches or something - like all hell is breaking loose, but in a very systematic fashion.

Epitomized in "Pilgrimage"

It begins very industrial and harsh, with soft battle cries in the background, sort of a revolt, or revolution. A New idea, main focus on the theme.
Then- rough guitar shows you what's actually driving the revolt/theme, and then there is a sound in the left speaker which evolves beginning at an evil distorted growl... into an almost proper chorus of females, into a perverted male groaning. While the underlying foundation keeps marching on, the main opening theme(revolt) is delicately played.

Now, enters the 'aged' sound of an army marching through town on its way to/from war, with the main themes played on marching snares and other marching instruments.
The themes evolve from a fresh new idea(revolution), through what is behind it(inherently corrupt government/liberators), and the introduction of another theme (resulting culture?) and its evolution through oppression, formal proper culture, to perverted sex-obsessed culture, only to end up going to be eventually militarized and moved to/from large-scale war.

What I think makes NIN so powerful (especially Fragile) is his almost Beethoven-esque use of themes and how he evolves them and interacts them. Reoccuring rhythms and melodies make it seem all the more familiar, which make it seem all the more powerful and close.

I think it's because Reznor and Co. took all the aesthetics and ideas of groups like Skinny Puppy, throbbing Gristle, Ministry, Coil, etc.. and assembled them with a pop cohesiveness that none of the originators had the desire, ability or wherewithal to do.
