Incubator Setup

Im thinking of filling a rubbermaid and filling it with water, then using a aquarium heater to warm it up, then just put the jars in the water. The water would get about midway of the jars so that it didn't touch the lid at all and I'd just have to be careful so that no water would get in the holes.
Would this work?

I have another rubbermaid laying around somewhere, i'll probably do it double style.
What would happen if the jars were in the water though?

You could put iodine in the water to take care of any contams and keep the outside of the jars disinfected Trouble is are ya using holes, Tyvek, etc; not to mention ya can't stack three high also tub in a tub is the next best incubator to a commercial hands down! Floating is not uniform at all in heating unless your using a huge reservoir. Tub in a tub is not a question in my book.

why try to change an obvious winner? tub-n-tub works........when you have a better tek.....post it!.......float your jars in water and reply.......a freakin closet at 80 will work.......the old PF tek didnt use any tub-n-tub.......and it will work......its all about time.......heat your whole house to 82 and you will win! what we are talkin about is optimal conditions! peace

AFOAF always found a cardboard box and a 60 watt bulb works great.

Incubator set up.
1. First thing get your bottom tub and put in your heater. I also add a water pump to mix the water that way it heats up much more evenly but it isn?t a necessary item. I got the tape from a boat shop and it has been working for some time. Good stuff for underwater.
2. Next put something (I used tall half pints) in each corner of the tub. This will keep the heater and pump safe from being smashed if I put in to many jars or do something stupid.
3. Now be sure to set the heater before you put on the top tub. I attach the top tub with zip ties cause the top tub will want to float.
4. Add the water. I like to add as much water as I can before it starts to spill out.
5. If you use the heaters with the external controls set them now to get ready for the jars. Mine use a dial and a sensor that gives the temp inside the chamber rather then the water. It also has a metal bulb rather then a glass one.
6. Finished

It took a couple of days but the mycelium started to kick ass after the ambient temp went up 5 or so degrees. Just finished the tub on tub action (hope you guys don't get off on that). Im not too sure about my heater, I might just get a different model. It was only $15 dollars for up to 5 gallons. I was so excited to see my mycelium explode after it warmed up a bit after a recent storm. Man mycology is fun as hell. Magash don't worry I have your rye tek bookmarked. I still don't know where you got those external controls from, i've been to two big ass pet stores and they have nothing like that.

Magash......they dont listen......post the TnT 500 times and they will ask if a cardboard box in a computer area is great........all that really matters is that the temp is over 80......and less than 88........its all about optimal conditions........TnT is a very simple and cost effective way of getting these conditions........not even Staments had a TnT.........

Okay, can someone answer me this? 7 popcorn quarts were G2G'd from 2 rye pints. Rye pints were thickly colonized when transfer was done. Put the popcorn quarts into the incubator, temp ~84. After four or five days the myc on the rye berries was shriveling, not spreading. Heat was dropped to around 70, myc picked back up and is now spreading fluffy white and robustly. This is in a large box, with tin foil insulating. Box is closed, so little heat escapes. Was using a fish heater in a quart jar filled with water for the heater. Does this make sense??? Strain is EQ. Cheers!

Methinks setting the jars in water would raise the humidity in the jars since there's holes for air exchange (er, there SHOULD be ) Of course this might not affect the growth any, but why risk it? Experimenting early on in the learning process is pretty gung-ho. Work with what's tried and true first, then once you get the process down, (and you have less to lose) work on experimentation

A space heater can effectively maintain the desired temperature.
