My incubator setup...suggestions?
    #3028055 - 08/20/04 10:20 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

After waiting close to a month for my first grow's jars to fully colonize, I have decided this time to heat my incubator.

I have a semi-submersible fish tank heated set into a plastic jar filled with water. The heater is currently set to 25% heat and on a timer. It's set to come on for 1 hour every 2 hours, 24/7.

My jars (10) are in a cardboard box as far away from the heater as possible to avoid to much direct heat from affecting the closest jars.

so far, the heat has been raised on average but a huge amount of RH is present - could this pose a problem in any way?...

I would appreciate any comments.

This tub also happens to be my grow chamber. I liked the tub in tub idea, but I'm on a budget, and 2 tubs plus a FULLY submersible heater would cost me, so Im trying to work with what I already have.

If you have a computer just put your jars in a shoebox (sterelize with lyscol first) and place next to your modem.I did that with my jars. It's been 13 days since inocculation and they are almost 100% colonized.

Hey laugh all you want but it works great, and my jars seem to be doing better than yours.Unless of course you are using pint or quart jars...

Hey your setup will work perfect  keep them jars @82-84 and you'll be golden. BTW a separate bin would be 3-4 bucks so you should be able to fit it into your budget. This way you could keep things cleaner but if this a one time deal then you got it covered quite nicely bro  GL

I'm using half pint jars, and I'm not laughing because I don't believe you. What kind of modem do you have. I have a cable modem, and it just doesn't seem to generate that much heat.

thanks - perhaps I'll move to a tub-in-tub for the next round, and rig something up so I can use my current heater.

Well you wouldn't necessarily have to buy a fully submersible heater.

I mean you have a heat source (the jar) and it would still heat the surrounding water around the second tub.

All you need to do to that setup is to add water and a tub and you have exactly what he has.

I suggest just placing your heater in a glass jar or something for safety sake (I always do) on it's side fill the bottom bin with 5-6in. of water then place the top bin on top. It will take a day or two to get the heat just right and then again you may just hit it right the first shot, remember it takes quite awhile for the temp to stablize  GL Here's my first tub in a tub before I got a commercial incubator, it works just as good (very evenly distributed heat) it's the one in the middle btw.

but I can't lie my heater horizontally because it has a non-waterproof temp control unit built on top of it. So basically I would have to cut a hole in the bottom of the top tub so the heater could come through and be controlled. I'll figure something out.

Bummer :frown: Then just place the unit in the top bin with the jars it will be fine. If you drill the lid so the heater snugly fits down inside the silicon it your water will stay in the jar much much longer! Double tubs insulate well, put water in the bottom and it will act as a heatsink and stablize temps even better! Forget the hole in the tub. again GL

nice setup hyphae!...are the flanking tubs your grow chambers?

you're right about the glass jar for safety, but the plastic allow the heat to transfer out faster.

Speed is not an issue here the water will only heat as fast as it can, jar or no jar. Yes outer chambers are fruiting chambers with coolmist plumbed in. Inside:

i have 12 quart jars sitting in a box in the closet wrapped in a blanket, and it isn't cutting it. Its been 5 days now, and there are no signs of colonization at all in any of the jars, and half of em are cambos which have a rep at fast colonization... so im about to go buy me some incubation stuffs and hope that thats my problem.

I know im probably jumping the gun, but hey keeping it a little warmer can't hurt right? :P

I had the same problem first time - I grew in my closet with an average temp of 65-72 degrees - it was a t least a week before I saw any sign of myc. Your jars WILL colonize, but it might take a month before they're ready.

Roadrunner/Brighthouse cable modem.Temp is an even 82 degrees F.If I can get hold of a camera better than my G/F's 1 megapixel camera,I will show you the setup and how far the jars have come along in the shoebox/modem incubator.

Tub in a tub is more stable temp wise Cornelius. Those things are small bins covering fluoros in order to keep light down to nil for the incubator, reason being the Sterilites are not light proof and I like to do everything by the book.

you could use your semi-sub in a tub-n-tub.......just keep the water level correct ......and get another tub.......$3-4 bucks.......the main idea is to mantain a constant temp.....any fashion will work.......

peace

Type Blue M. It has the glass door also. Got it on E-Bay a few years ago for a little under $200. I put a tray with water in the bottom as it's a dry incubator, btw It works awesome and IS light tight!

very cool. I looked on ebay for incubators awhile back but i could only find egg incubators and I think a couple of other things that were of no use, but thanx for the pic and the info.
