No UV lights are cheap. About $25 from some website and we jest put them in a wooden box w/ a UVlight. Turned it on for 10 seconds. Then off & took the agar out. And no it isn't harmful. 10 seconds wouldn't hurt you. I think those tanning lights are UV and if you really wanted you could make the box all wood and the UV rays would be shielded.

Tanning lights are BS. The good lamp is 25 bucks from gesupply.com.

Runs in a standard ballast. I have this thing about ordering stuff online, like I can't, so I still don't have one (but I'm still workin' on it).

And it is bad for you...

Yup.. You certainly don't want to get any of that short wave uv in your eyes.. Wear sunglasses even if you're only getting reflected light into your eyes.. Otherwise you'll end up with a sunburn on your eyeballs.. Not pleasant.

I did that once welding (quit laughing!). It felt like my eyeballs were coated with sand. They hurt open, they hurt closed. They just hurt... Alot...

I had to wear patches over both eyes for 3 days. LOL.

Chances are that it isn't too good for the mycellium. And so make the box all wood; it's not like they peneterate the wood and give you a sunburn.

Im just sayin that its a good tool to use before working
not while your working, damages mycel,& skin too not just eyes
but you can get away with it in a gb with gloves on...

aha .. i see .. and what kind of light do you recomend me to use in the terrarium , i have it in a very dark place and there is no window near , so there is no sunlight ....

Go to the local petstore and buy an aquarium light. Just check on the side and look at the spectrum graph, and just pick the one with the most blue light in it's spectrum. They seem to prefer that color. Now I have a question, what about those reptile bulbs that simulate moonlight? Where on the spectrum are they? I know they throw off heat too so they might be perfect for colonization or even fruiting if the light is powerful enough.
