I agree. The indoor lighting really creates a lot of variability.

I believe that the tests without the colorimeter are great for comparing two or more samples against each other to determine which is more potent and to get a rough estimate on the actual potency. But to achieve their quoted 5% from HPLC accuracy they must have been testing in ideal conditions where the participants were using controlled lighting conditions for their readings. That is just my assumption and not a documented fact, btw.

Not to take anything away from the test kits. And not trying to imply that it is any insidious plot to get you to buy a colorimeter. The colorimeters that they now sell were made by a different company and came after the tests were available. They don't make a huge profit on them either as they sell them at the same price as retail from the company that produces them. I am sure that they get them wholesale, but it doesn't look like some giant money spinning cash grab to me.

All this to say that using the controlled diode light source inside the enclosed chamber of the colorimeter is certain to be more reliable than judging against a color chart by eye using indoor lighting of any source or color range. Between light hue, intensity and the differences in human color perception there are just too many possible variables.

Okay, enough shilling for this morning.

I'm curious if anyone has developed programming for psilocybin testing with other brands/general extraction solution and reagents? I asked miraculix if they would sell just the citric acid solution and reagent since I have plenty of lab supplies (and prefer what I have over what comes in the kits) and they said they are unable to do that :frown: I have tried other brands of testing kits and the color results definitely vary--I don't trust them even when blanking. Am I overthinking it?

I have not tired the other companies that have sprung up more recently. I did use the north american web site qtest.org before they shut down. They were affiliated with miraculix and sold the exact same kits, but they are no longer in operation under that name.

What other companies have you tried? I did look at others, but have heard that they basically just copied Miraculix's methods, so I do not know if they would work with the same programming or not.

Miraculix does sell the reagents in the bulk kit for use with the colorimeter that includes less lab materials. I use some of the lab materials and discard the rest where I have better options.

As far as blanking goes, I would not trust the reagent from different companies. I can even detect differences between bottles from the same company by eye when purchased at different times. So I would definitely only be using blanks from the same source for the greatest accuracy.

So I'm going to test gelatin LSD. I think I should start with 1/2 tab like blotter.

I can reach out to Dr Felix to see what he thinks. I imagine that it would be half just like blotter, but he is usually pretty good at responding to questions on the Signal group.

He says yes, the same process. The only difference is that the gelatin should dissolve where the blotter wouldn’t.

I see instructions online. To be heated to 122 degrees to dissolve correctly.

What did you use to blank the test?

I haven't done an lsd test in so long. I genuinely don't remember what I did. I assume I followed the instructions, but I don't have them handy to see what they say about blanking.

So when using the photometer with individual kits, you blank the detection solution before use on your sample.

That is the most correct way to do it. I only did that the first few times after getting the colorimeter and then just compared that reading to a sample of water and deducted the difference for following tests. At least until I started using the bulk kits which come with extra reagent. For the last two bottles of detection fluid, the difference is .28 mg/g so that is what I subtract from the results when blanked with water for psilocybin Qtests.

When I am going for max accuracy I still heat the detection fluid and use it to blank, but the difference between that and water is still consistently between .25 and .29 for mushroom. I have only done two LSD tests and I really don't remember what my exact process was for them.
