Mystikal's first grow. Monotub. treasure coast cubensis. * 3

Bit of a grow log in progress here. Will update as I go.



Inoculating 2.5lbs rye grain bag with treasure coast liquid culture September 19th.

Mixing coir maybe 1:2.

I have 70% iso for cleaning, gloves and micro pore tape.

I haven't purchased my tub yet and not entirely sure what size I would want. Maybe around 30-40 quarts for the tub. I am planning on running excess spawn if I have it some in large Ziploc freezer bags too.

Was thinking of running an unmodified tub and inducing fresh air via cracking or flipping the lid.

My only advice is, if the vendor made materials give you issues, feed mills are a beautifully inexpensive way to source grain. Agar work will always save you heartache on the culture end of things, coco bliss is thee shit coir wise, and shoeboxes are the easiest and most forgiving fruiting chamber available. Pressure cooker wise, the 16qt presto is a gem if you decide to start doing stuff from scratch.

Basically the busy mans tek from hhg.  I see no issue.

Heres what id do. Trip out on this:


Id get two 16qt tubs. Melt holes with a hot scewdriver.  2 on the short ends, 3 on the sides.


Id take two qts out of the cvg and set them to the side.

Mix the remaining cvg and spawn and split that in half into the two tuns.  Pack it flat. 

Then the qt of cvg you pulled as a topdress on both.  Tamp
That flat and smooth. 

Lid on, set and forget.  Keep the lid from raining on your surface. 


Voila.

I bought two 16L tubs. They are kinda short at 22cm though so am planning on using the dubtub technique, Flipping one and placing it on the other doubling my height when fruiting. I am going to try unmodified tubs for this first run.

With the shorter profile they have a bigger area to fill so will just use one tub. I am also going to run about 1lb of mix in a large freezer bag as well to see how that is.

Definitely using a casing layer.

I bought an ultra fine mist spray bottle.

Should I be using a liner for this strain? I ran it by AI and it was pushy telling me I needed a liner as treasure coast is prone to side pins.

Some stand by liners, some don't. I don't bother using a liner. As long as the casing coir is ever so slightly more hydrated, the mycelium will recognize this and pin from the surface were the ideal humidity/moisture is.

The shoebox in my signature is treasure coast. It's a great variety :mushroom2:

I judge the moisture needed by drops from the tightly squeezed handful of coir. One drop being the substrate mix, 2 drops being the casing layer. Alternatively you could lightly mist the casing to create more ideal moisture for pinning.

Thanks guys! The rye is inoculated and sitting high in a cupboard now.

After some heavy iso wiping I hit the bag with about 4ml of liquid culture spread over three different spots with one poke. I was aiming to use a bit less but those syringes are easy to push. I shook the culture first as it was kinda stringy. I wiped the port with iso before and after. Covered it with micro pore tape. Leftover 6ml of liquid culture in the fridge in Ziploc. I've heard it will keep well like this.

My tubs arrived today and one didn't have the handle attached. I broke it trying to attach handle. This will be the lid. Custom venting.




Running a heater and keeping my place at 24 Celsius for mycelium growth.

So happy to see this.

It's hard for me to give advice because I measure in mycoquarts instead of pounds.  I'm still a newb but I swear by shoeboxes at 1:4 inside of a larger tub.

I've never modified them but now I have probably 12 lol so I think I'm going to follow Beef's advice and poke a few holes just because I've never tried and would like to see a side by side.  The reason I love shoeboxes is because not every quart is the same in my eyes.  Each one behaves just a little different.  This also keeps me from putting all the eggs into one basket.  If one quart was bad, now the entire tub is bad. 

This won't be an issue for you since you only have the one source of spawn.  It's important to have a thick substrate and to really compress it down as much as you can, but I'm not sure if there's a benefit from going above 10cm.  You might get by just using the regular lid. :shrug:

Temperature wise that seems excessive.  I often go down to 16 with no issues whatsoever.  But I'm super heat sensitive and would be roasting my balls off.

If this becomes your jam you gotta learn agar :yesnod:  become self sufficient with grains ASAP, homecooked is always more reliable and much cheaper without a paper trail.

Exciting times ahead, pretty soon you'll have stuff that blows your dispensary outta the water.

I treat this like gospel

Instead of risking 4 quarts of grain and one quart is bunk and ruin the whole 4, just put each quart in its own and let them figure there own ish out

Thanks again guys! Really appreciate the wisdom shared here. Some stuff to think about for sure. I may try two tubs or a couple ziplocs plus one tub. Really not sure how deep this much mix is going to equal in one tub. Seems like I am making a fair bit of mix but I have nothing to go by.

Definitely taking spore prints for later use. Excited to hang on to a strain I like and maybe work on it. I really enjoyed breeding cannabis.

As for temps, I swear my thermostat is wonky. I set it to 24 C a week ago and it doesn't seem overly hot in here. I ordered a digital thermometer to test this. I feel my bedroom is for sure a few degrees colder and plan to fruit in there. I've heard good things about a little colder temps for pin set.

Mycelium is looking nice and bright white this morning. Seems to be gaining traction rapidly.
