What they DONT tell ya.
    #29670591 -

Earlier this week, whilst I walked my elderly doggo through the local dirt worn, woodland walking paths: just talking to my self, as I sporadically searched the cluttered forest floor for uniquely attractive tree limbs to acquire for... further mindless fiddling with. (As most bros would have... Stop acting unsure with confusion, cuz we all do it. Cuz a good stick IS a good stick!! Cmon! Lol)

And after meditating for a good bit, I finally became focused upon one singular wondering if you will... a question that at the time seemed incredibly profound. Something so powerfully important; I decided it was worth sharing here, making its very own post, in hopes more who hear it feel inspired by it enough to share their own truthful answering of their own...

So, my question is:

If you could go back and do your life all over again. In your opinion, if you could:

What one peice of advice would you actually listen to, take it to heart, and follow to the absolute T in order to change your life for the absolute BETTER:

AND, What warning would you actually take seriously, in an attempt to avoid mistakes/pain/and bad outcomes for your future self:

Just wondering,

HH

I would say don't.  If you have to repeat your life to make it better, you have missed the point.  Every day is new.  Stay present and instead of harboring regrets over past mistakes, do your best now and improve from here on.  Yeah you could perseverate over your failures or missed opportunities, but it's learning from those things and adjusting in the present that I feel personally defines you.

I also had a really shitty childhood.  I would never ask to repeat my life on account of that.  I would never expect anybody else to have to go through what I went through nor would I expect anyone who went through similar or worse to want to repeat their experiences for the sake of avoiding mistakes or missed opportunities.  I think in the end, it's about how to choose your direction and if it previously was negative or inadequate, then reclaiming that direction and correcting it in THIS life is the thing to be learned.

So in short, no I would not do it over.  I want to learn from my mistakes, not live to avoid them.

I WILL say that IF I HAD to do it over again, not that I would want to, but if I died and some shitty universal force made me repeat this, I would never touch weed, I would never touch psychedelics, and I would never touch any drug not prescribed to me by a doctor.  For some people these things do not affect them, but for me, my drug use clouded my judgment so badly for so long that I totally eradicated my mental health, which is something I have only recently started to recover from in the last few years.  I can blame my past, but I don't really experience trauma like other people.  I absolutely destroyed my better judgement just because I thought I was having fun, but in reality all I did was hurt other people and myself through my drug use, which culminated into a toxic fucking addiction.  So maybe other people can smoke weed and do shrooms and take acid, but I cannot and wish I had never.  I do not know what life should be like because of this, and honestly that is a disappointment I now have to live with and learn from.

man i'd tell myself the total opposite (apart from weed, i'd tell myself to pump the brakes on that a bit). i'd tell myself to not let my doctor put me on antidepressants for the crime of mourning my dead dad. i am still pissed off to this day about how i was railroaded by my doctor and mom like that.

Yeah, feeling sad or fucked when you lose a loved one is normal. It doesn't need to be medicated away. It's a process.

I would have definitely hit the brakes on weed, stims and MDMA too, but not psychedelics. Every single part of it has been special and important to me.

I would advise myself to be more objectively thoughtful though. I feel like I've spent my life being caring and empathically thoughtful but failing to see the true nature of consensus reality around me.

I would tell myself to take a real honest assessment of my strengths and abilities and apply that to the process of choosing a career. As a young idealist I had this notion that I could become something I was not. I’m not saying people can’t change, but I do believe the often repeated assertion that personality traits are stable over time. Basically I ā€œfumbled the bagā€ of a lot of the potential I had to establish a more successful career earlier in life. Now I’m at a stage where, while it’s not impossible, it’s gonna be a hell of a lot harder, and demand much more sacrifice from my loved ones.

On a related note, I would also tell myself to pick up the guitar as a teenager and pursue music as a course of study and/or career. Which I realize sort of contradicts my first paragraph haha. What can I say, I’m in a slow burning midlife crisis and feel completely unfulfilled and unsuccessful in my so-called career. I just wanna play music all day while also somehow avoiding financial ruin.

I would have told my younger self to simplify your life as much as you possibly can while still living a comfortable existence and do things that make you happy or bring you joy. Also save every dime you can to set yourself up for success in living that simplified life. I have come to the realization that my father was not a bum, he did what he wanted, followed his own path and was human that is flawed like the rest of us.

Start lifting at eleven.

Take shrooms and MDMA much earlier.

Take more risks.

Stick with programming.

Fight tooth and nail to keep my Ritalin. Losing that really tanked my trajectory.

Learn how to DJ earlier.

There is no black and white. Only grey. I would like to have known about the yin/yang concept.
Actually need to edit this.
There IS black and white and grey. Everything is ultimately grey though. Everything can be seen as different shades. There is good in everything and bad in everything. I'm not very good at putting this concept into words because my particular view of yin and Yang is slightly different to what the general view is afaik

I agree with the sentiment about not wanting to go back and do this over again. In truth I would t want to either. Because it not just the lessons I've learnt in word form that matter, it's what I had to go through to learn why those lessons are important. I couldn't have learnt about yin and yang without being fully committed to black and white thinking that ruined a lot of my relationships in the past. To be honest, I probably could have learnt to accept and seek help earlier if I had have had a different upbringing and I think that's a shame, I didn't need to learn that in ways that caused me trauma, but at the same time because I have learnt through experience and not from learning from being told so, I'm more likely to actually seek help because I know what happens when I dont

I think I would say to myself don't do mdma. But tbh, I don't really like regretting shit I just for sure would never do it again. I realise now it actually contributed to the demise of the friendship I had with the person I did it with. It also ruined the Star Wars franchise for me lol, because I watched it for the first time on the come down.

Man I feel this. I was having a similar crisis earlier this year at age 31! So you're not alone with those feelings. At least you waited to true mid life to have those feelings. Lol šŸ˜‚

Haha well I ended up again in nursing, although in a much better job setting.

I think down the track if I decide I'm not gonna have kids I'll probably go back and study engineering. It would be a massive challenge for me and I would like to know more about how things are made and run. It's a big commitment tho, and I might not like the responsibility involved in the role (the same issue that happens for me with nursing).

Anyway! Gotta decide if I 1. Want kids and 2. Want a relationship. At the moment I don't want anything lol
