Alaskans to Vote on Pot Legalization in '04

Registered voters will get a chance to decide next year whether to legalize private use of marijuana for Alaskans 21 and older. Lt. Gov. Loren Leman notified initiative sponsors in late November that the petition has the 28,782 signatures necessary to get the question on the 2004 ballot.

Sponsors must collect signatures equal to 10 percent of those who voted in the most recent general election.

Since the marijuana initiative was filed prior to the 2002 election, it is based on 10 percent of the voters in the 2000 general election.

"We have enough signatures," said initiative sponsor Linda Ronan of Anchorage. "The problem is that it hasn't been certified. We don't know what the holdup is."

Annette Kreitzer, Leman's chief of staff, said she expects the initiative to be certified within the next two weeks.

Sponsors of the initiative have grown accustomed to delays.

On Jan. 13, 2003, Leman rejected 194 of 484 signature booklets over what Anchorage Superior Court Judge John Suddock described as "trivial rule violations."

Following a lawsuit from the initiative sponsors, Leman was ordered in September to recount the signature booklets.

Tom Godkin, an administrative supervisor for the Division of Elections, said the division has not yet completed the total count of the petition booklets but confirmed that the group has more than enough valid signatures.

Ronan said the initiative sponsors and backers plan to begin a public relations campaign next year to build support for the proposed new law.

This will be the third try for Alaska...

Last time it lost because writen into the language was a pardon for all inmates in Alaskan prisions for Marijuana related offences..

This angle was used by the oposition in comercials that said that thousands of "dangerous criminals" would be let loose on the streets and they would terrorize common people...

Is their a link to the woding of the bill? I remember the last two were written quite well.

If it does pass, things will become very interesting.  I remember back in the 70's when gas prices shot up and the Feds passed the 55 MPH national speed limit law.  The states got pissed off and said, "we won't enforce it".  The Feds responded, "Then we won't give you any of the tax money that we have taken from your citizens back (for transportation projects, fixing roads, etc)".  The states enforced the federal law.  :frown:

If you think the US Fed will sit back and just let Alaska legalize cannabis, without any retribution, you are kidding yourself.

Heil Lincoln! Good thing he put an end to the terrible system of federalism the founding fathers set up for this country.

Same thing they did to Hawaii with its alcohol age limit of 18. They threatened not upkeeping Hawaiis interstates until the age was brought up to 21, finally they succumbed.
But why hasn't anything been done to Cali?

I think Alaska can expect massive amounts of government propaganda in the coming months.

You mean like John Ashcroft's raids on law-abiding, state-licenced medical marijuana growers? I believe that finally stopped when the Supreme Court deemed it unconstitutional(and rightly so).

This isn't your fathers marijuana. It's ten times more potent now and is the crack of pot.

Sweet... so I only have to smoke 1/10 of what my father smoked to get the same effects... what's the problem again?

Vodka, ten times more potent than your fathers beer... the crack of alcohol.

Don't ask me I didn't name them but that is what they are.
Anyways, I understand there has been some enforcement of federal law in Cali on individuals, I'm just wondering why there hasn't been any enforcement on the state itself through leverage and the likes.

peace
