I deleted shop pay (shopify) cause they support neo-nazis * 1

I knew shopify sold merch for white power groups for a while, but I never realized shop pay and shopify were the same company, anyways I deleted it now

Our store does use Shopify though. They don't process our payments or produce our merchandise, but they provide the storefront which integrates with the companies that do that stuff.

I'm no apologist, but I'm kind of glad they don't micro-manage the products on their platform or they'd probably have booted us for drug-related merch. And they do technically prohibit nazi stuff.

A lot of service providers try to stay content agnostic. Cloudflare's another one which has taken some flak over the years for the sites they protect, but it's one of the reasons I feel like we can trust them and they won't suddenly dump us. If a service provider is too eager to kick people off their platform, it can make potential customers wary of using them. I don't think they're being evil, just pragmatic.

Wait, are you throwing the baby out with the bathwater?  Please show me where Shopify itself is selling merch for or otherwise actively promoting/financing white power groups.

If your concern is instead that some white power nutzos happen to use Shopify as the back-end for their own personally designed merch that may appeal to or represent white power whatever, that's a whole different ball game.

Not to say I align with racial bigots by any stretch of the imagination, but I do align with the principles of free speech, and so I can't really tell these idiots they shouldn't be allowed to put their logo or whatever the fuck they're trying to say on a T-shirt, hat or other merch.

Analogous to someone who realized the Shroomery uses Shopify for our store's backend, and decided to boycott Shopify on account of Shopify supporting pro-drug ideologues.  Shopify is agnostic in their position.  It's the Shopify client of issue that you should be boycotting, if that's your thing.

Ironically the only boycott ive ever seen truly hurt a company was bud light over the Dylan Mulvaney thing which is an incredibly stupid boycott for an incredibly stupid "cause" if you can even call it that.

i mean to be frank, boycotts are super successful in changing policy, whether its corporate or government. protests actually are super ineffective. most organizations don't care if you protest them as long as they keep making money.

That all depends on how many people boycott at once, how much money they lose and whether the company knows that is why they are losing money. Individual acts of boycotting without them knowing seems pointless to me.

You just know people aren’t buying these to adorn their home with 100 stickers, and not just vandalize their neighborhood with spamming them, but that many of those will find their way onto front doors, windows, cars and other property of immigrants and minorities of the "wrong" shades of skintone.

How many far right hate groups are founded and amassed in the USA while Antifa and radical animal rights and environmentalists are slapped with the label “terrorist organisation” because some of them punch nazis or “liberate” doggos from animal testing labs?

American freedom is lopsided, you are completely free to be antisocially far right but if you argue for proper healthcare you are deemed the worst kind of communist. The results are fantastic, never has a more undisciplined fascist led a firstworld nation marvelling at autocannoning rubber boats of suspected drug traffickers on national TV: ogling a third term and becoming a Forever President with his greedy beady eyes.

I routinely stretch my imagination beyond the confines of the known universe into the Many Worlds my Spirit Guide invites my mind to wander. On these ventures I do not encounter a Geokills deliberately enabling fascist scum :grin:

I do agree with Gopher, faced with the rise of his local chapter of the NSDAP and wanting no part in helping some kind of maple syrup trump in power.

Maybe some limits on freedom are needed as guardrails to preserve that freedom for all who have affinity for it, and even for those who don’t, in all endeavors not undermining the collective freedom.

We all agree selling boxes of dynamite at Lowes is a bad idea - but so is selling big rolls of highly questionable racist symbols and slogans.
Not good for the neighborhood.

I don't expect to.sink them, but why would I continue to let them collect the data of what I'm buying and any fees they may collect when I purchess something?

I think that is the moment it becomes a hate crime in Canada, I'm looking at those stickers, probably legal, distasteful but I dont think they count as hate speech, until you stick it on some immigrant's property. I don't know if it should be up to shopify to stop this. If they print anti abortion stickers that end up on a clinic, did they do anything wrong? Do you want shopify saying what is ok and what isn't? 

Maybe its better there is a record of who they sold the anti immigration stickers to so investigations could be done. Same with if islamic jihad makes recruitment materials, maybe knowing where they were mailed is a good thing?

I was going to print up some stickers of trump with "big pedo is watching"
for the tourists at Calgary Stampede, like vandalize the parade route, but i worry that it could be traced back to me if i make them on a site like this. I just want to have some fun, not ruin my life.

I appreciate your post Asante, and I get what you're saying.  I even agree that legal limits and active discouragement for known hate-groups or hate-related action is appropriate.  The problem is, as always, the oft bias humans tasked with red-flagging what may be deemed legally inappropriate and restricted.

And although I agree with your stated points quite readily, it's a bit off in the weeds, relative to prohibiting Shopify because their infrastructure happens to be used as a technical backend for some ostensibly certified assholes - some of whom may admittedly and in fact be dangerous or wish harm toward others.

On a strictly technical basis, deleting your shop pay app/identity likely won't prevent the average e-commerce shopper from continuing to line Shopify's pockets.  Despite avoiding their proprietary authentication and stored payment mechanism, it's still likely that gopher may land on and purchase from webstores that utilize Shopify as a backend technical resource (as it's a huge provider, and many stores that use it can hide that fact through custom design), thereby still paying Shopify a monthly fee and a % of sales commission, regardless of whether the given store is acknowledging shop pay integration in their visible UI.
