I've only started to use tubs this spring. And it was only because I had a few mishaps sterilising bags, with chips poking through the bag from the inside and also with chips that I put in the bags too wet. I know many on here have used tubs with success, so in an impulse, I decided to not waste all the energy. The chips were still 'good enough' having spent 4 hrs at 19 psi.

So far I tried with Azurescens, Cyanescens and IWL. One tub of Cyanescens went moldy and was put outside to hopefully recover. The rest went smoothly.  Inoculated with whole and half jars of grains (rye) and I've used standard cube tubs with 2 of the 6 holes with poly and my and the rest taped up, another box that has just one hole. But not fully closed ones. What I also did was cut the surface shape from a trash bag and put it on top to prevent the wood chips from drying out too much. Which, ime invites green mold, trich, etc.

So yeah, I'm kind of new to doing it this way but i certainly like it for how easy it is vs bags, that need to be precisely on point.

Gonna try the tub route soon.Got some grains just about ready.Leave the tub lids closed,partially closed? Does it matter?

I think I have some slime mold in my Cyan pot. I was eager to check on the progress so I pulled back the top layer and found this. Should I be worried?

Mmmm might just be metabolites. I've seen this with woodlovers before. You'll know if it's growing. And at that point, yes, you should be worried.

What is this? Some bug eggs or a competing fruiting body? It looks like it is coming from mycelium.

Wayan bag, fermented for 3 weeks and is infested with bugs rn haha

it’s amost a gelatin consistency. I have 8 pots going but I was eager to check on the growth of the 2 cyan pots and have been manhandling the myc more than I probably should. Then I had the realization that I would never do that with my monotubs. :facepalm:

Another reason I don't bother fermenting for indoor stuff. Oven pasteurize all the way. The bugs are probably springtails. Which will consume all of the mycelium over time.

Hard to tell from the pics though. Open the bag up so we can see better

Edit: you may as well just put it outside.

Yeah I've definitely had the jelly before it. I'm not 100% but I usually just consider it metabolites. Regardless, it's fine.

I'm waiting to finish up my garden, still need to paint and build some stuff for drainage. As soon as that's done I'll open up any bags that don't have slime mold and dump them there with some collected oak wood/dirt and I'll take some pics if that's still here haha.

The wood I usually collect is from the woods which can have competing molds on it. Appreciate the help!

If you can get any at all where you are at I would recommend you try 'cleaner' arborist chips or even store bought animal bedding wood chips and see if that works better. I'm afraid the wood source you are using right now isn't helping your cause with competitor native species already in it.

I had a few bags of sterilized store-bought chips which I used as a base but they contammed after the last transfer. I tried to keep a base bag for each species but they all ended up being contaminated after the first transfer.

The garden near where I live had like 5 bags of fully colonized strerilized chips and some fermented collected wood that was mostly to 90% clean ps cyan mycelium. So far it appears to be surviving the summer and this was the first patch I started at the beginning of this year, hoping to get fruits this winter or the nest.

I think the biggest problem is the bugs laying eggs during the fermentation process and then being sealed in a bag environment, in theory if I just straight up throw oak wood debrie into my garden with some already established mycelium it should be alright, correct?

Thing is, I do not have a lot of sources of wood, there is a pine forest near me (ps cyan mycelium appears to love it actually but I was told that oak is better) and an oak forest 30 minutes away. I usually drive to the oak forest, collect wood from there and ferment it. I will look into other sources of wood but also want to try testing out just chucking wood into my garden with whatever colonized mycelium I have would establish a patch.

I'd agree with the others that it's metabolites.  You'll know what slime mold looks like when you see it.

There aren't landscape supply stores by you that sell mulch and stone and stuff? It's like 35 dollars a yard where I'm at. I just bring my truck and the back hoe dude drops a couple buckets in the back. Most of these places will deliver too for a little extra.

I would like to make an outdoor bed for some PA this year to get it ready for next year. What would be a good substitute for alder for them to grow in? I have heard cottonwood is an alternative and plenty to be had in MN

For smaller beds, you can get a few bags of naturescapes (usually 2cft), they are cheap and that's what I used for my Cyan bed (for bulk, originally started on alder bbq chips, and minimal grain).
