Extending a wifi signal just a bit....
    #18682102 -

I'm currently in a huge old home.  Three stories of thick wooden beams, stone and brick.

My wifi router is on the third floor and can not be moved.  When I'm on the first floor of the home, I get a signal once in awhile.  Is there anything I can do to extend the range by just a few yards?  Hardware or software, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks,
Lana

You can get a range extender from newegg or tiger direct or just about any online consumer electronics store.  http://www.newegg.com/Wireless-Range-Extender-Media-Bridge/SubCategory/ID-2948?Tpk=range%20extender

Ive always wondered how effective those things are. I could use something myself. Reviews seem decent.

I have a desktop PC upstairs and my modem downstairs

My signal wasn't so great in my PC as my Wi-Fi adapters antennas are inside of my case and not in the open.

I bought one of these and it fixed my problem

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=18501&zenid=ec34b32a9f072c5cf86edfd23f499229

It states its only compatible in the modem/router but I unscrewed my 3 antennas in my WiFi adapter card and screwed this in and the signal is great

I was experiencing major drop outs and a 5/100 connectivity average

This antenna has my Wi-Fi strength consistently at 4/5 bars without a noticeable delay in speed when downloading or uploading.

Highly recommend

Good luck

Hi Lana

If the house has on old telephone line, you can hardwire your computer. Better for you (healthwise). And faster connection too. Most telephone companies refuse to do it because they want us frying like crispy Thai chicken wings:)... but you can still find people. All you need is a phone line and an ethernet cable that costs around 10 bucks. You can also buy long /extension ethernet cables that could reach from the original socket to the 1st floor for example.

All the best!

Why bring this 12 year old thread back  tanja?
Especially because Lana probably has a software instead of hardware issue if still a problem.

my wifi router doesn't even have a power supply that can get the wifi strong enough to even melt an ice cube.

If you are using the vendor supplied wifi, dump it and get some Ubiquiti access points and a cloud controller. Get Wifi6 APs for sure. You can wire them up as meshed devices between floors and it will probably be better than what you are experiencing now. Or at best find a contractor that can do ethernet wiring between floors in older homes.

Cloud Key
Access Point
That Access point actually does Wifi7
