I can build you something to extend the range...Will it be secure?? Fuck no.

The money you pay is often the difference in your neighbor spying on your computer, and you having the privacy you expect.

If you have the knowledge you can secure a walkie talkie, but most don't and pay that little extra to have a secure network.

I don't think most of you don't quite understand how unsecured wireless networks are. I can get in to the majority in less than 1 hour, and a lot in less than 30 minutes. Do you want your neighbor, or even a guy 10 miles away seeing what you are transmitting over your wireless??? I sure as hell don't.

 I run an unsecured network, because I don't care. Guests can use it if they like.

It's not the fact that they can use your internet, although, now with the restrictions on bandwidth it can be a pain in the ass. It's more about them exploiting security flaws in your PC, and them gaining access to your computer stealing information...Say, when you order something online...Your CC information is now theirs. If you do a credit history check...Your Social Security number is now theirs.

The list continues.

Well, they couldn't get my CC number unless they installed a trojan. You can't sniff it out of the airwaves due to SSL.

Thing is, I run an unsecured network in a suburban environment, and I've never seen anyone else appear on the network in two years.

No, but someone who finds the right security hole can monitor ever keystroke you put in...Or turn on remote desktop where they can actually control your PC from theirs.

Just some thoughts. Odds are it won't happen to you, but I'd rather be safe.

That's a good attitude. My attitude is just 'meh, I'm not paranoid' which is harder to justify, but it works for me.

I'm using dd-wrt on my old linksys wrt54g as a repeater bridge, it's perfect.

Our network is wpa (tkip).  I am pretty sure that my setup will not work with AES WPA...

It may it may not...It really just depends on your router/repeater/switches whatever it is you are using. Hell, my linux wireless won't work unless I have WEP security enabled...So, I had to wire it in. WEP is so unsafe.

Anyway, yea it really just depends. Either you have to read, read, and read some more to see if your hardware is compatible, or you just have to try it.

WEP is useless, and easy to crack in mere minutes, however, I would love to see you crack my 128bit wpa2 encryption on my network, would take a powerful computer a VERY long time to even crack it...

peace
