Silver is under $18 an oz invest or not??
    #21268646 -

Since interest rates on savings accounts are shitty and I noticed silver is under $18 an ounce. Is it a good time to buy? last time I checked it was over $23. Any advice would be great!! Not looking for a SHTF lecture. Thanks.

Most commodities only really track inflation. As a long term investment, silver has gone from $4.41 in 1975 to say $18 this year

$18 - 4.41 = $13.59

13.58/ 4.41 = 3.079

3.079 x 100 = 307.9% return in 40 years.

(1 + x)^ 40 = 3.079

1+ (40 root 3.079) = 1.028

= 2.8% return over the long term, which is basically the long term inflation rate.

If you compare that to Coca-Cola (5400%), Ford (787%), McDonalds (7600%), At&t (5800%) or any of the Warren Buffet type stocks it pales in comparison over the same time period. Those amounts do not count the substantial dividends you would also receive.

Even government bonds have a higher return than silver over the long term.

If you are looking to basically bury the coins in a tin can in your yard "just in case" its not a bad thing to own some silver or gold. Most financial advisers would not recommend having more than 5% to 10% of your investment portfolio in hard commodities and it is unlikely that the swing in prices will ever make you rich or even cover the broker costs unless you are buying huge bricks or holding onto them for several years or decades.

The joke for lots of financial pundits is that gold (or silver) always looks expensive as there is no way to figure its intrinsic value. Gold has no earnings, and therefore a Price / earnings of infinity. Although silver has some industrial uses it is largely in the same boat as gold.

Invest if you are looking to store you money without earning any real return or if you don't trust banks.

I'm also looking to grab some silver, but am currently staying my hand from clicking "buy".

i don't see the continued strength in the dollar tapering off any time soon; and i expect the price to continue dropping while the dollar strengthens.

If you don't have any metals and you want to incorporate metals into your long term asset allocation strategy, this is a fine time to pick some up.  But since you are making a direct comparison to interest rates on a savings account, I'd also suggest looking into LendingClub.com, a peer-to-peer lending service where you loan your money to others in small increments (as little as $25/borrower).  I've had an account with them since 2008 and have averaged between 8-10% annual return throughout that time.  It is unsecured debt, so it is higher risk and won't function like a savings account or a physical piece of silver, but it is an interesting and so-far stable way to earn interest at rates that will crush any traditional savings account.

To put this into perspective, my asset allocation is approximately as follows:
  • 50% house
  • 35% income property
  • 10% stocks/options
  • 2.5% precious metals
  • 2.5% unsecured interest bearing debt (i.e. LendingClub)

All great info! I feel I also should invest in a firearm which may take priority over PMs to some considering the versatility of  protection, food and possible increase in value over silver.

Ill look into lending club you speak off.

For perspective, given that this thread started on February 13, 2015:

  • $18/oz of silver would today be worth $76/oz
  • $18 of U.S. dollars would have the purchasing power of ~$25 today (based on Feb 2015 CPI-U of $234.722 and the latest Feb 2026 CPI-U of 326.785) -- an inflation increase of about 39.2%.
  • $18 invested in the S&P 500 would today be worth $70.44 -- an increase of about 291%.
  • $18 invested in BTC would today be worth $5,534.18 -- an increase of 30,645%.

It's amazing how gold maintaining its price with supply ramping up and sliver doesn't.

Gold is ultimately where it's at for PMs, IMHO. I'm not a panic prepper type, so I've always believed in stacking silver, then trading up for gold.
