Not music but listening to the YouTube Channel 'Frankies Shelf'. Canadian book reviewer

He's a good reviewer. Tends towards young and queer, female lead book reviews (not young adult thankfully, just younger aged key characters).

Likes horror too which is my favourite genre.
Also if he hates something he rips it apart in a real bitchy way and it just makes me laugh

The phrase "all technique but no substance, no heart, no soul" describes a performance, work, or action that is technically proficient or flashy, yet empty of emotion, authenticity, or deeper meaning.
Based on philosophical, martial arts, and artistic contexts (notably from Bruce Lee and discussions of performance), this concept can be understood as:
Sterile Performance: Technical mastery without emotional connection or spontaneity, which can feel repetitive and empty.

"No Technique" (Bruce Lee Philosophy): Lee argued that the "highest technique is to have no technique". This means that when techniques are learned, mastered, and then forgotten, they become an honest, natural expression of the self, rather than a rigid, ego-driven exercise.

The Problem of Ego: When action is performed solely to display skill (the "small self"), it lacks the "soul" of true, spontaneous expression. The "soul" exists in the "void"—where technique is absent because it has become second nature.

Failed Artistry: It is a criticism often applied to martial arts that have become a rigid, formal "dance" or "kata" rather than a usable art, or to music and arts that focus only on speed or complexity at the expense of feeling.

The Key Difference:
With Technique/No Soul: The performer is thinking about the move, or focusing on "how" to do it.
With Soul: The action is not consciously performed; "it hits all by itself"
