Beach, Alder and Oak are all fine, I like to use Alder personally, but it doesn't matter much. Oak will probably last a little longer as it's got a higher density.

But really, they aren't choosy.

Yes, for a pot and and outdoor bed, inoculate a few jars of grain, use them for either hwfp or chips, when working indoors I greatly prefer grain -> sterilized chips -> chip to chip. That way you'll have a high spawn ratio in spring and chances increase it'll fruit the same year.

:takingnotes: Thanks Churpee :hatsoff:

I have heard many times that you have to use a certain type of wood. In my experience, there's no difference in whatever type of wood you use. If youre going for indoor colonization, fermentation alone is asking for disaster if not total failure. I promise you if you have clean spawn, as long as you sterilize your sub after youve fermented it, you will have no problem with indoor consolidation until you are ready to bury them outdoors.

I don't worry about prepping more chips for the outdoor pile, the colonized substrate is strong and healthy enough to subsist on its own, and can be buried in one solid chunk or mixed in with pre existing landscape/council woodchips

As little as I want to support anything Churp says, I have heard the same thing from Pheno, at least something similar in regards to it not mattering sterilized vs fermented. Nonetheless, I do see a slight problem with the fermented route is that it's not sterile...
Gotta wonder why we do agar work in front of a flow hood instead of on a toilet seat. Maybe sterility has something to do with it. Therefore, one perhaps might get more success with sterile method, versus one that you may be coming back like "what did I do wrong in this fermentation process"? When either it gets infested with bugs, bacteria, or other fungus.

Yeah I knew they all work, was just wondering if any performed better in any way. I like the idea of the yeasty boys doing some of the leg work with breaking down the wood, but right now it's to cold outdoors and I am already on my wife's shit list for running the PC at least twice a week so the fermentation part is a no go, either way I would absolutely sterilize the chips after fermentation, not because I don't think it couldn't work without, but I enjoy the safe route, so I'm sterilizing everything until it goes outdoors come spring.

Churpee is a solid guy in my book, but thanks for your input

My large beds I have no fucking clue what was in them lol , came from tree trimming company that would give free chips by the dumpload mostly fir cottonwood alder maple but whatever the fuck was in the way ended up in that truck lol, just don't start on cedar/ pine lol, any smoking chips are a great place to start though I prefer my indoor prep on hfp , the inoculation points are next level

I can definitely see the inoculation points argument, but I was wondering what is the process? Do you do grains first and then hwfp, then hwfp to untreated chips come spring? Any coir when spawning outside to help with humidity or? Share your knowledge Cron :strokebeard:

I started my Azure bed 20 years ago using Alder chips used for smoking that I got at the local feed store. They are a little pricey for the small amount (2 lbs) you get, but it does work just fine.

Excellent, could I bother you for a quick summary of what you did?

Yes I'm going grain spawn to hardwood fuel pellets, raio doesn't really matter but typically going 1:4 spawn to pellets but all the way up to 1:10 , from there indeed it's untreated chips in the bed so long as they are fresh ,I don't tend to throw coir in I did this year just because I had extra laying in front of me lol

Nice, thanks.

Another couple of things, so with oysters you could do spawn to hwfp open air, would this work just as good or? I can only do small bags in my SAB is why I'm asking.

What kind of ratio should I aim for outside?

Here's a few azure bags , they've been colonized for almost a month but whatever it will be warm enough in a couple weeks to make a bed , u certainly could get away with simple pasturized chips indoors but for such a long process I don't bother fucking around with it , I got thousands of bags I may as well use them.
My brother simply makes grain spawn then spawns direct outdoors to his raised beds and does fine

I sent you a link to my original bed setup.

Bed doesn't need to be deeper than about 4" imo. I'd skip the cardboard pieces I used in the original bed they aren't needed.

If you use any kind of fuel pellets be careful you don't overdo it, they can smother the bed if you put too much in.

I've found growing grass or making a bed near grass helps with the fruiting.

Over the years most of the fruits are along edges of bigger pieces of wood and they fruit more in the grass than the open bed due to the humidity the grass holds in compared to an open bed.

I've thrown various wood at into the bed, alder, maple, apple, box elder, and it was all eaten up. The only thing I've found the azure mycelium from my bed doesn't like is coir.

If you have the room, I'd recommend multiple beds since you have so much spawn. You might find that certain areas produce better than others.

That is all really great azzie and woodlover advice, thanks for posting that!  Got any recent pics of your bed?  I’m curious what a 20 year bed looks like :mushroom2:

So that’s a lie.  You don’t have any experience growing woodlovers and also the type of wood does matter and can be species dependent.

If I tell you I’m part ashkenazi are you going to threaten to kill me with a knife?

I double dog dare you to post a picture of a woodloving mushroom you have grown.  No words, no meaningless rambles, just a picture of a woodlover you grew.

Nice bags :naughty:

I'm sure I could get away with a lot, but I like that time consuming, over thinking safe route so I'll do grains to sterilized wood.

Would it make sense to do some kind of mixed ratio of hwfp and chips together for indoor colonization?

I don't have any spawn yet, but I do have a couple of different spots around the garden I can try and see where they like it the most :awesomenod:

Thank you for the input :hatsoff:

Nice, I was wondering when you would show up and help me do this thing, I would love to hear what route you recommend. Right now I am thinking SSLC(it's ready to go) to grains, then do G2G to sterilized chips, all indoors. As said above, I am also wondering if mixing chips and hwfp makes any sense?

Then I'll spawn to beds and pots come spring. Would it up my chance of success if I pasteurize the chips going outdoors? And would it be a good idea to use a layer of gravel or leca at the bottom of the beds and pots for drainage? Should the beds be all chips?

Sorry for all the questions guys :muppet:

I’ve always gone agar>grain>outside woodchip bed.  It works for me without problems, but other people claim it causes rodent problems.  I’ve never pasteurized, no point outdoors.  Just mix in a good amount of spawn (grain, chips, hwfp, whatever) with your chip beds and you should be good.

Growing azzies or any other cyan clade is about patience more than anything.  It’s about making some spawn, creating well made chip beds, and leaving them the fuck alone.

To be fair, the culture in the picture is a stick with pins I brought home from ft stevens in Oregon.  I’ve been expanding it for a few years.  Saw it pop up on Inat a couple of times this year

If ya have the chips use them , I only use pellets because I have tons kicking around from my oysters lion's mane n shit , the smoking chips are 6.99 for a small bag here , for 5.99 I can get a 50 lb bag of pellets but the chips really are fuckimg great lol, they colonize nicely hold moisture and they are kiln dried
In reality these are stupid simple it just patience more than anything but almost impossible to fuck up , especially starting with clean agar I mean u could literally take a few clean plates skip everything else and put those plates into chips outside and eventually you'll get your fruits lol

Call up some local arborist companies and see if they will drop chips off for you.  Don’t know how it works there, but here they have to pay to drop chips at the material yard, so they willingly drop truckloads off at your place.

Outside I just lay chips out in the rainy season and spawn to them.  Super easy, low fuss.

Since biofuel became a thing, we get like 50 or 60 euros here for a truckload of chips. But yeah if it isn't too much of a hassle most arborists will happily bury your yard in chips. Renting a small chipper also isn't expensive, as long as you don't have to drive an hour for it.
