Gymnopilus dilepis? or purpuratus? Or both?

Habitat: specifically growing on waterlogged paperbarks in a swampy area. Have never found one on any other type of wood. South West western australia.

Gills:
Pale yellow when young, rust brown after spores start falling. Closely spaced. Fluoresce in UV light. For other details please see pictures as I'm not very familiar with the technical descriptors

Stem:
Length: about 4cm. diameter: about 1cm. color: very pale yellow, sometimes streaks of purple. texture: fibrous, very strong. Doesn't bend or break easily. when picking, they tend to peel bark off the tree rather than snapping off.  solid, thick.

Cap:
Diameter: about 6cm at maturity. color: maroon, darker when wet. texture: scaly when dry, and when wet and waterlogged it's like the texture of wet leather. convex when young, flattening out with age.

Spore print color: rusty brown and thick

Bruising: Blue green, but only slowly and slightly.

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom: mild and mushroomy (sorry, all mushrooms smell like mushrooms to me)

They’re definitely Gymnopilus. Something like g.purpuratus or similar.

I would guess something around Gymnopilus purpuratus, however the taxonomy of these needs a lot of work.  DNA barcoding can help narrow it down, but there aren't a lot of good reference sequences for species in this group.

You're the guy to ask about this, is there anywhere in Australia that does DNA barcoding? I find a lot of mushrooms and could potentially collect a lot of samples.. you know, for science.
It just blows my mind how little information there is on some of the mushrooms I try to identify and I'd love to help expand that knowledge.

I don't think so, but there are some people in Australia who send samples to Mycota Lab.  Since there isn't a lot of sequencing there, they would probably run them for free or a small donation.

Thankyou! I did do some digging and found that most places in Aus don't do barcoding unless it specifically helps them achieve their goals of improving industry standards or conservation of specific organisms. Good to know there's still an option, and I'll look into it.

It's so nice to speak to the man I've seen in YouTube videos and referred to so many times in forums and literature. :blush:
