Update:
This started as a tie-dye photo dump so I could share some cool art with the community. But there's no reason to keep it limited to tie-dye, so feel free to share your own arts and crafts. We'd all love to see it ❤️

Hey y'all, tie dye is one of my creative outlets so I thought I'd make a thread to share my results.  Feel free to post your own projects, and if you have any questions about my process, tools, or tie dye in general then I'll answer the best I can.

I don't do it nearly as much as I used to, but a few weeks ago I was laid up with arthritis so I cranked out a couple designs. I used leftover liquid dye that was months old, so it resulted in colors that are faded/washed-out/pastel. Here's some pics:

Mandala with some extra folds that resulted in a unique center "flower" with 12 points instead of 8.  Kinda looks like cellular division.

 


Didn't have any unique ideas so I did a circle inside a triangle inside a square

   


I'll post more porn when I do more designs ✌️

Nice work! I haven't tie dyed an ages. My daughter got some dyes for her birthday, so we are going to do some together soon.

Thanks! That'll be a fun project with your daughter. Always love when a youngin gets into art. Once you get into it then I bet you'll remember more than you think. Plenty of instructional videos on YouTube that'll jumpstart your creativity too.

Ordered some fresh dyes so here we are again

I mixed the dye using a magnetic stir plate which is a major upgrade from shaking bottles

Tied up a mandala and did a random color pattern using the "if this, then that" approach

Colors:
Deep Yellow
Deep Orange
Fire Red
Imperial Purple
Deep Space (blue)
Gunmetal Gray
Raven (black)

 
Square cotton "flour sack" folded in half, radial lines every 15°


Pleated a fan-fold so that all green lines are touching and all pink lines are touching


Tied triangular sections using artificial sinew, a waxed string that gets killer tension


Dyed using needle-tip bottles for precise application

Will post final results in a day or so :rockon:

You're right, it can totally be done.  I was scared! I wasn't up for the challenge :lol:

But learning this technique would open up a lot of possibilities in the way of tapestry art...I might have to give it a go.  I have a lot more patience than I used to with this hobby, and I appreciate the value of being methodical, so it might work out.

Also that site has an article on making shabori lamp shades, which is right on time because I built a hanging lamp that needs a shade:
