hand-made tie-dyes

Okay, so all my old tie-dyes are coming apart at the seams from upteen million washes, and I replaced them w/ some I bought from some family in WA.
Well, I got the shirts and they all look AWESOME. Really vibrant colors, cool patterns, but I wonder if they're really hand made, 'cause the stitching isnt dyed, and neither are the tags.
On my old ones, the tags were all discolored from dye. The person says they're white 'cause the tags/stitching arent 100% cotton, so wont absorb the dye.
Bullshit, or not?

yea, like if there's nylon in the stitching or tag the dye wont adhere.

hehe wow my fashion textile courses actually come in hand!!!
it's true - 100% cotton WILL absorb the dye however nylon will not. Most synthetics will not absorb the dye - so he is correct.
as for the stitching? that's weird. stitching where? it's possibe that it was piece dyed and then stitched together. however that's expensive and rarely done. there's also garment dye which is dying each garment while already assembed.

You never tie dyed before? Yo take a shirt and tie it a certain way with rubber bands, then you dye it.

You can get the supplies needed, at art stores and maybe even hardware stores I think... you'll need some buckets.

I've done, but when I was a kid. I don't remember how to do it exactly. Also, I have some AMAZING t-shirts done that way, and I'd like to know how to do it that good

Does it really matter if it is hand made or not? There are cool colors and designs on it either way.

I used to make and sell tie-dyes back in the day and even the best dyes for tee-shirts aren't going to dye most tags.

undied tags and stickets.. when i tie dye (www.glassmovement.com/galleries) i use shirts with cotton thread so that your sticthing dies too... otherwise you have a died shirt with bright white stiching... tags do the same thing too sometimes... it depends on the material....
get all your dying supplies from dharmatrading.com... it'll take a bit of investment, but it's fun... or you can get a small kit from the fabric/craft stores....
