Hi everyone. I got some bullrun ( hillbilly + P.E. strain) that I s2b about 2 weeks ago and now look like this in a shoebox. I have 2 questions . 1: do they need a true casing layer like P.E. do? 2: if it does need one ; should I do it now.

I haven't grown these before so it's hard to tell because I look at those tubs and they seem like they have a lot of surface area left to colonize. And that feels to me off after two weeks, but maybe it's something to do with this specific type. Maybe this mix is a slow grower, I know it happens. Visibly it looks ok, but it definitely seems a bit dry based off the substrate color.

AFAIK  PE doesn't get a true casing, it gets a larger than normal pseudo casing at spawn.

I was told to use peat moss specifically for the casing layer on APE. Yay or nay?

Straight coir pseudo casing/too layer for PE and should be done at spawn time. Should be 1/2" - 1" thick.

You could do it now but it will slow you down even more.


No cubes need a true casing layer.

Just let it run, my friend. They are growing fine, why change what is working? PE is slow growing, this mix may be slow as well. There is no pathology there.
