I'd use FreeBSD if I was running a server. If you know some Unix/Linux it should be easy. If you buy the boxed set that comes with a shitload of software (like 7 CD's) you get a really bad ass manual that's worth the price of the box itself.

Fedora Core is garbage IMHO.

I prefer OpenBSD, but only 'cause I know Theo... (The guy that maintains the code...)

freebsd is better than open in many ways. it has more ports, compitable for more hardware and so on . openbsd is tight but has more limitations, but comes with great security , i heard it should be secure out of box,  but you can do better with freebsd securitywise if you combine freebsd with trustedbsd ,. freebsd > * when it comes to free operating systems

Like Linus,or does he actually do most of the coding? I thought the free BSD's all had commitees that maintain the kernel.

I actually like the BSD's better(I hate system 5),but since Linux is more popular and has more drivers and programs and such,I use that. If FreeBSD came a little earlier with more fanfare(ie hype),it would be where Linux is right now.

On a side note, as stated earlier, the more restrictive your OS is, the more archaeic and more limited support driver/up to date it is as it has to be audted more often, etc.

Also, your security is only as good as the administrator is. A fool running openBSD is just as susceptible as anything else.

no admins are 60% dumbasses (not you admins here,);D jk, the key is to update daemons wich is exploitable (read bugtraq) and good encryption , there is no point in running a service where they find a new buffer overrun every second month (yes im taling about linsux) if there is a better alternative

this is the bad side of open source, a bunch of lousy codes in circulation.

openbsd has had a strength in not having a bunch of exploitable services
not a remote root exploit for years

Well... one... in something like eight years... not a bad track record.

> tell theo he is a fucking asshole for me

I think he knows, and doesn't really care.

He is very talented and does a lot of coding...

one that they ADMIT to. I do remember there was some HUGE argument ovr bugtraq becuse of an exploit that came out, and they tried to play it off like it wasnt an 'openBSD' problem, but a seperate package....
