How to setup a proxy server
    #2029813 - 10/21/03 08:20 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hello,
I know what a proxy server is, and I know that Microsoft has Proxy Server 2.0.

What I'd like to know is which OS and/or software would be the best to use when setting up a proxy server designed to handle 1,000+ users.

I'm thinking of running Apache as one but I'm not too familiar with it

Any ideas would be great.

Lana

taken a look at squid? ive heard of it being used in some pretty heavy duty environments. I've got it setup at home as a transparent caching proxy (redirect all outbound 80 requests to the squid port) and browsing is incredibly faster. Just a quick google turned up suggestions for 2000 user setups/2mbit:

I would say Pentium II 400MHZ or higher with more than 256MB RAM and Huge
SCSI harddisk with file descriptors > 3000. Or look for even better one!

so I'm fairly confident in saying squid /can/ handle the load of 1000 users, even though this is only one example, I've read of implementing it in larger scale projects, and other projects, but like i said thats just a simple google search, I'm sure with more looking i could come up with more but don't feel like it, either way your going to need to do some research =P

and from the squid site:
Quote:

Squid is...

* a full-featured Web proxy cache
* designed to run on UNIX systems
* free, open-source software
* the result of many contributions by unpaid (and paid) volunteers

Squid supports...

* proxying and caching of HTTP, FTP, and other URL's
* proxying for SSL
* cache hierarchies
* ICP, HTCP, CARP, Cache Digests
* transparent caching
* WCCP (Squid v2.3 and above)
* extensive access controls
* HTTP server acceleration
* SNMP
* caching of DNS lookups

What I'd like to know is which OS
Any based off of UNIX will be fine, *BSD, linux --ha like i would recomend windows as a server =P

You might look at the Zeus and see if any of their products will work for you. I have been very impressed with their web server and network load balancer.

What sort of deployment is this? Is it like a small company or something? I might have a good hookup.

This proxy server would for registered shroomery members only.

Instead of having people constantly looking for a decent proxy server, I'd like to work on one that ONLY they (the members) can use.

Not all registered members are on at the same time, the resources are avaiable (on my end) but I haven't had the chance to talk to any of these wacky admins about it....

I just think that it would be very useful and helpful.  Especially for those who are paranoid :smile:

A good proxy server I have set up is squid - it comes with red hat 9 and is simple and easily configurable.
