ever play with FreeBSD?
    #3686603 - 01/27/05 01:18 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

It looks like fun.

Any opinions?

The install seems pretty straight forward, did you run into any trouble?

Seems like it could make a nice desktop.
I'll give it a try.

Personally, I prefer linux on a desktop, but I do like BSD on my gateway and I might move some of my servers to it.

Also, I prefer openBSD to freeBSD.

In any case, it's all better than 'doze once you get the hang of it.  Don't be scared off because things are different...  You'll learn to like them

Good luck

Well, part of it just a general "feeling", you know?

I like openbsd's ports system better with its seperate trees and such...  Very reminiscent of debian, which is the linux I use and love.  Also, openBSD has nifty security (and a good security record, to boot) features and such.  It's really a neat system, if debian didn't own my soul already, I'd probably be using openBSD on everything.

openBSD website

Check it out, they've got plenty of information from people more intimately knowledgeable about openBSD and its innerworking and just why it is so kick ass

Because I know several of the OpenBSD developers.

Just because of the huge amount of documentation.
I'm not a full blown geek yet so i'm gonna need all the help i can get.

I now have 5 FreeBSD computers and 1 Win2k.~  Win2k does everything i need windows to do, and is my primary workstation, with 1 freebsd box running X and all the goodies. I prefer fbsd to any other os its so simple yet powerfull.

Simple?

Oh well, this is no time and place for a holy war, it's the not-using-windows that is the important issue.  :sun:

I hate geekwars.

I just think the system structure, and kernel are not as off the wall as non-users like to believe.

But the kernel is [edit: mostly] the same across *BSD, so this is an argument for BSD and not for freeBSD. Just curious, for my sake, is freeBSD your first, or less than third, distrobution of a *n?x operating system?

It is probably my second. I first installed linux, then freebsd. Since ive ran net and open bsd, irix and solaris, and freebsd was the only one I liked enough to keep around w/o it being overly annoying.
