you "program a patch" by changing the aspects of a sound.

when you load a preset patch into any of Reason's instruments,
you can Tweak Oscillators, Amps and Envelopes, setting you own parameters,
it is best to record your changes in MIDI live with Automation.

you save your new patch
by clicking the Disc Icon Button
next to the patch selector
in any of Reason's Instruments.

there are a plethora of reasons for a Reason / Cubase session to crash...
best thing to do is create a virtual OS with only the essential audio apps you need.
assign as much ram as possible to Cubase,
and turn Reason's CPU usage to 70% in the Reason Preferences Dialog.
make sure it says Rewire Mode in Reason Preferences - Audio,
and make sure you are slaved to Cubase in Reason Prefs - MIDI (it may be differnent, i'm on a Mac)

PC audio rigs crash no matter what you do so, SAVE and SAVE OFTEN.

Latency (delay) is a part of MIDI to Audio recording,
if you record the VSTi as audio in cubase,
you hear a short delay as you play it,
but you Won't hear it when you play that audio track back.

it is your Monitoring of the sound that is causing the delay.

you can reduce the latency by decreasing your Audio Buffer Size in Cubase Audio Prefs,
but that increases the work load on your CPU which may cause it to freeze.

hope that helps...

I should probably add that Cubase SX2 (don't know about V1) has automated latency correction.. Works like a charm!

Ditch logic. Cubase SX will do it all for you.

Logic doesn't handle MIDI as well as Cubase does. Logic is more of a multi-track audio studio. Cubase can handle all of the audio shit as well.

Fiend, I'm in seattle too. You should check out the production forum at NWTEKNO.COM alot of very knowledgeable PNW peeps there.

Quote:

(2) I am having severe problems with Cubase SX crashing, which is half the problem I am having with it, as it's hard to do anything at all when it crashes every 5 minutes (it's really that bad). Reason has crashed recently too, although much more rarely. Everytime I ReWire them Cubase crashes within a matter of minutes. I had no problems like this before with my comp until I was using these audio apps. I even reinstalled and reformatted and even when these were like the only things on my comp I'm still having the problem. I run a Athlon 1800+ w/ 512mb RAM. Shitty on-board sound card and a $40 USB MIDI interface. Any ideas of how this can stop?

If the software is pirated, you may have a bad version.

Just a suggestion:

Though the Cubase line may have a more robust feature list, I've found it to be INCREDIBLY unstable. Try the new Sonar. I've used Sonar with Reason for a while, and have had almost no stability problems.

Also, if latency continues to be a problem, consider buying a more "professional" soundcard. Midiman makes very nice low budget, low latency cards.

If you do decide to give Sonar a try, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.
