security code on login screen?

what is the deal with this security code?
i would assume it has to do with stopping automated loging in and possibly ddos attacks?

Recently we have experienced some brute-force attempts to crack account passwords. These attacks are automated, and work simply by trying every possible password (starting with common words and phrases). Users can guard against these attacks by choosing secure passwords which are 10 characters or longer, not based on dictionary words and which contain a mix of numbers and letters. However, in order to add an additional layer of protection for our members we have implimented the security code feature which prevents automated login attempts. We feel the slight inconvenience is worth the increased security, especially in light of recent events. Hopefully you agree!

Oh yeah, as aje pointed out: if you check the 'remember me on each visit' box on the login screen, you should only have to enter the security code once during the initial login.
