i thought cutting them leads to rotting leftover, which leads to contam.

Good Job! What strain is that? You got them in a flower pot? Give us more info on how and what you did please!!!! Never just yank out a mushroom from your patch-gently twist it back and forth and it will pop loose easily.

Indoors maybe, but the point to growing outdoors is that mother nature takes care of the nasties.
It is much better that the person should have cut them so as not to disturb the mycelium network.
Even indoors, though, I cut mushrooms all of the time so as not to disrupt the growth of less mature shrooms nearby. Most times mycelium just grows over the stump.

Hmm, AFOAF has experienced much different results. When he's left stumps, they blue, then turn black and usually sit there looking nasty. Sometimes, they contam, sometimes they don't, but no new pins ever grow around them. I've noticed that some strains are more likely to do this than others and the later the flush the more likely they are to do this.

In this pic you can see a few spots where I cut off shrooms.
I think the trick to doing it successfully inside is to get as close as possible.
The spots where I cut off shrooms appear bluish and are surrounded by thick white mycelium.
The places where those shrooms are growing from all had shrooms cut from them leaving at least some remnants behind.

I just pull my shrooms and for my outdoor with shit, dirt, and coir i peel off the outer skin by wiping away from the cap with a towel.
