I have to go to work supa dont think Im deliberately ignoring but with all due respect, this is a load of white noise.

this thread clearly needs a kick in the pants as it is no longer 2023 at any rate. Im not sure if stipe is ever going to post again, but as long as I draw air, I will make my best effort to purify our communal information.

i shall return.

I used to pc for 1 hr at 12 psi without an issue, does that mean I suggest it here?

My bathroom was my sab, I just sprayed it down with bleach and waited a few minutes for the air to settle.
Do I suggest the bathroom and bleach over proper clean practices?

Definitely not, we actually have to be careful of making claims that the populous will follow blindly because they're after short cuts at every turn.

I think most people are talking about spraying contamination in substrates with H2O2, alongside cutting out "bad" parts and salting trich. I can see how a strong enough H2O2 solution (not the 2% drugstore shit) could have some value in cloning work and the like, but I personally am trying to move away from sanitizing in general. I'm inspired by the accounts of people not using gloves or iso at all, and just relying on physics and fine motor skills.

Oh I absolutely wouldn’t try to save a grow with h202. That’s just a waste of time. @Rockin, of course I don’t think h202 will be your best friend in surgery. I’d like to think you know I’m a little smarter than that. I’m talking about strictly preventative measures here. I did do some fruit swabs from a trich bag though. I have yet to breaks those out and test the results. I yanked fruits directly above the trich and sprayed with h202 of course and swabbed.

I do have 5 trichey swabs of these papa Smurf if anyone would like to test one themselves! (Yay, free spores!)

And geez beef, I sure hope stipe doesn’t hope on, he’s the one person I don’t want to argue with haha. Before making a new 2024 thread, I strongly encourage you guys to try out a few varieties of unpasteurized coir to test what I’m saying here. I can link a couple types that I know for fact contain trich. I will never pasteurize my cube substrate and am grateful for the conclusions I have come to.

I don't think anyone has argued you can't get a bad batch of Coir, so not sure why you keep on that one.

As for the rest you do you. All the rest of us are saying is, DON'T advocate these as good techniques because too many Noobs are looking for a quick answer.

Coir has been argued a lot in here. What are you talking about? And I would like to see h202 put back in the light and I do believe it can save a lot. (NOT TO SAVE A TRICHED OUT GROW)

Not venting a pc, sure, we’ll leave that one in the dark. It’s only 10 minutes.

But the H2O2 is where we all disagree with you. You won't get any higher rate of contamination simply washing your tubs with soap and hot water than if you hose them out with H2O2 afterwards. It's unnecessary. It is no better or worse at sanitizing than Alcohol. In fact I would actually think alcohol would be better as a preventative. H2O2 also doesn't dry completely, instead it breaks down rather quickly to plain old H2O. Again making alcohol a much better alternative.

I have taken trich ridden tubs, dumped the old substrate washed in hot soapy water and immediately spawned new in them. I have only lost 1 tub to contamination in the year and a half I've been growing, and I still got fruit from it.

We can argue about this all day if you want. I know h202 does a better job fighting against molds than iso. You’re arguing about something you have zero experience in and haven’t tested yourself. I don’t need hot soapy water. For one I use a liner to keep my tubs free of dirt, secondly, I remove one batch, spray with h202 and place another batch back in. I’m not changing filters or anything. Those get sprayed with h202 as well. I’m not wasting water either. The thing is, I’ve done it both ways. Have you? You’re speaking so highly against pushing h202 away when you’ve never implemented it or tested it. Seems kind of ridiculous to me.

You know what iso is good for? Bacteria and that’s it! You know what contamination is also the least concerning on agar? Bacteria! You ever fight trich on agar? It’s a real bitch that can easily be prevented by spraying your fruits with h202 before swabbing them.

I almost never get trich on agar. If I do, I'm 99% sure it turned up because I fucked up my sterile technique somehow. It's also no big deal, because a triched-out anything turns a nice bright color of green and all I have to do is toss it. As opposed to that kinda bacterial culture that I just can't bear to discontinue, but still haven't managed to fully clean up.

I think that the standard 350 650 gram bricks of coir, regardless of brand, should generally be free of additives (including trich). I believe they're pressed on or near the plantations, then traded wholesale and eventually marketed.

You mean 650 gram? Haha. My swabs don’t come up with trich either. I’ve receive plenty of trich swabs from people though. When you only have 2 swabs to work with on new genetics, you don’t exactly want to just toss them out.

You can also save swabs pulled off a trich plate with, guess what, h202. It takes some transfers and recovery time, but it certainly works.

You can take the most bacterial cutting from that dish to a BRF puck, and the bacteria will be stopped dead in its tracks. I promise you that. Don’t even bother with water agar

Lol I just came back on to correct that, it hit me while I was doing dishes...

I honestly just have too many different lines I'm trying to run, even within my meager library of genetics. I think it's been well over a year since I started anything from spores, and longer than that since I introduced outside genetics. Running duplicates and tossing wonky plates has worked well for my needs so far.

Sheesh you’re telling me! My library posted is only about 1/3 of what I actually have. But the most disheartening thing I did at the begging was lose genetics to trich. I refuse to let that happen again. Even in this years LAGM, I lost swabs I received that were contaminated with trich, got replacements that I, again payed for, now that won’t even germinate. 🤦‍♂️ I just want people to really test out h202 some more before it’s completely shunned. I have been going back to spore a lot lately to isolate monokaryons as well

There's an important distinction between facts (backed by empiracal scientific data) and ideas (even those backed by personal experience). Far too often in our society are facts and theories based on sound ideas or even experience confused.

for fucks sake weve been over this.  h202 needs to sit for 5-10 minutes at 6% concentration (or greater) to be effective as a surface disinfectant.  i covered this like 5 pages ago.

IT EVAPORATES IN DRY CLIMATES BEFORE THIS THRESHOLD CAN BE REACHED.  Like maaaaybe in high humidity areas where we ARENT USING FLOW HOODS, you might reach that time interval but please refresh your memory that we are in the business of offering RELIABLE INFORMATION.

quit acting like we havent either tried things or done the reseach.  we arent stupid nor ignorant and youre assumptions are merely insulting and youre just convoluting a topic thats vexxing enough as it is.

let it fucking go.

Um, where did you find the information regarding 5-10 mins for surface disinfection? We use it for work and granted, it’s at 10% but our understanding is it’s practically instant.
I’ve been using it from the get go in this hobby, I generally keep my mouth shut about it due to the same reaction Supa is getting, but for the things I use it for it works:shrug: if it didn’t then it wouldn’t be used in certain aspects of the medical industry, sure, there’s alternatives and for the sake of avoiding confusion for noobs I get why it isn’t promoted but to simply discount it is straight up dumb, it’s a tool, used properly in the right situation/circumstances it works.

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution requires approximately 10 minutes of contact time to effectively inactivate vegetative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, it may not be effective against bacterial spores."

H2O2 may effective for some people. But serious microbiology labs are way more likely to be using either isopropyl alcohol, a chlorine bleach solution, or another approved disinfectant.

70% isopropyl is all it takes for hobby-scale mycology.

👍 be nice to see a graph showing peroxide percentages to time/effectiveness, I guess it comes down to what we have at hand, peroxide is cheap and handy to me and comes in 10 litre quantities at 73% concentration, iso I also have access to but costs more, I use both for different things simply to keep costs down and practicality purposes.

We can talk about this all day. I have the results right in front of my face. Nobody said or assumed you were ignorant. Implying that i am based off just me disagreeing with you is saying that exact same thing as if you’re assuming im ignorant because you don’t agree with me. So chill out with that and stop getting all bent out of shape because i believe parts of your guide guide are bullshit. Once again, I did say I respected you. It doesn’t mean I’m going to just follow yours or anyone else advice blindly. Now that would be truly ignorant. There are plenty of reputable cultivators who, once again, don’t even use iso. Instead they’ll solely use h202. And yet, they’re vendors, vending so much product that it’s literally their only full time job. Yet that must be ignorant of them. Surely if their shit isn’t getting properly disinfected, they would be handing out a hell of a lot of contaminated cultures right? I don’t believe you’re ignorant beef but I sure as hell do believe the shroomery as whole can be. Especially when you TCs are afraid anyone steps out of line and challenges your beliefs. I gave you guys HARD facts and ways you can test them your damn selves easily, yet you’d rather sit there and just tell me I’m wrong.

ok.  ill chill.  i can respectfully walk away from this.  sorry to get bent out of shape.  as ive said, i respect you too.  you certainly have the pedigree and reputation.  youve been around about as long as i have and ive seen your work countless times.  i guess i get annoyed when you say "you should try it" because i feel like ive tried everything under the sun (including lysol, which was convention when i started back in 2009).

anyway no disrespect sup.  ill respectfully disagree that this should be considered convention and leave it at that.  we good?
