I will say that the constellation of symptoms has changed dramatically over time. In the beginning, coughing and shortness of breath were very highly pronounced symptoms. That isn't the case anymore. It seems to have converged along the same path that most cold viruses presumably do in terms of its symptom constellation: fatigue, fever, aches and pains. There are many variations on this but those three now seem to be the common three

It is hard for me to reject the hypothesis that at the very least, those variants that do the most damage to the lungs have gradually been replaced by variants that do less. I just can't wrap my head around any evolutionary trajectory where your existence depends upon the existence of a biological organism and transmission between them, and those among you who target the one organ system that is most likely to acutely kill the host organism also manage to become the most common. I'm out of my depth but please explain how that could happen

A disease just needs to be transmitted. Doesn't really matter what happens to the host after that.

If someone is contagious before symptoms emerge, as long as the invisible transmissibility period is sufficiently long then the symptoms themselves can be pretty much whatever. Especially in a world where a significant number of people eschew vaccines, quarantine measures, and public health statistics. That pretty much eliminates any possibility of a coherent population-level response to the emergence of more deadly symptoms.

In all likelihood, there are all sorts of parasites constantly evolving and emerging onto the global scene. We're just more likely to notice the ones that do the most damage. They don't have to be the most well-adapted parasites to get onto the leaderboards.

Cases like ebola, where you're highly contagious but also dramatically bleeding to death out of every orifice at the same time, are the rare exceptions. And much easier to deal with in a global sense.

To some extent, more damaging symptoms are a random mutation. But they're probably quite often tied to features that do increase a parasite's overall fitness in the environment, like speed of replication and the ability to infect internal organs.

The amount of time that the organism remains ambulatory while contagious is a significant factor, not just whether or not it happens

As much as all the pandemic restrictions sucked, some really cool shit emerged from it. Here in DC they closed lanes on a lot of roads and put up outdoor dinning kiosks and they are cool as fuck.

Those aren't cool as fuck the last thing I want when dining out is to be seated eating in the streets in a lane of traffic like some street walking tramp. Nothing says ambiance like sucking down exhaust fumes while a bunch of looky loos stare at you eating. When will you finally admit that this pandemic has ruined this entire country. You can't even get a cheeseburger in America without getting fucked up your ass and thrown into the streets. The whole country has become basically just a rip off thanks to you people.
