I think you misunderstood. Every variant has existed as a single virus, but even the most fit version of the virus has a very small chance of being amplified through replication. The vast majority of virus particles never find a cell to infect and are dead ends.

Over time the mutants that are fitter should become more prevalent and vice versa though, no? Fitness for a virus means, in part, not killing or immobilizing a host

The sars-cov2 virus is smaller than the wavelength of visible light, so viewing one with photography is not possible. They are viewed using a beam of electrons and sensors that detect electrons, and all that equipment is computerized. It’s a stupid request.

Even a fitter organism has to compete against the overwhelming numbers of slightly less fit viruses the host was originally infected with. Also the nature of viral replication in a host cell which can be infected with many viruses at once means that new viruses are being constructed with a mix of genetics and proteins. A new virus doesn’t necessarily have the genetic code that represents the proteins it is made of. Even if it’s a single virus, any genetic mutations are being put inside a new virus that was made with the original genetic code. It takes another replication cycle for genetic mutations to produce viruses based on that mutation

Generally speaking though it still seems that over time the genetic sequences corresponding to lower mortality rates should become more prevalent? Just a question of how quickly that happens.

That’s kind of an urban legend. The idea being that a more lethal virus kills the host before it has time to infect other people. That doesn’t really apply to something like covid because it takes a very long time for covid to kill someone. By the time someone is dying from covid their infection is almost over anyways. What about a virus that is more deadly because it can replicate better which results in a higher viral load? That could mean it is more infectious. So now you have a virus that is more fit and more deadly. (And this is just spitballing ideas because there isn’t even good correlation between viral load and disease severity)

I think the perception that a virus is evolving to become less deadly has nothing to do with the virus itself and everything to do with host responses. With covid, fewer people are dying because 1. The most susceptible people get killed off early. 2. Acquired immunity.

If anything the original wuhan strain was a weakling compared to what’s circulating now, but there is really no way to quantify this type of thing because there are so many variables of virus-host interactions.

Interesting hypothesis

I had to covid in mid June. Constantly exposed to it. I'm not sure I'm on the same page with you about the virus getting stronger because there just simply aren't very many young people that get hospitalized with covid anymore. And there used to be quite a few. Covid treatment itself hasn't really changed much. I know you said the most susceptible people died off earlier whatever but.... Are we assuming everybody got exposed?

How many covid naive young people are left in the population? Between vaccination and previous infection, there probably aren’t many people left who are susceptible to severe disease
