Re: Any home theater snobs? [Re: badchad]

In my man cave/viewing room I got a Yamaha soundbar, a sizable Yamaha sub that has some pretty potent bass, LG OLED tv.

While my sound setup of course can't compete with a true home theater that costs north of a thousand dollars, it's all I need. I still share walls (ugh) with people. I live in a condominium building with 3 other condos in this building.

That Yamaha sub alone is plenty enough to get the neighbors to call the cops on me if I was blasting it for any extended period of time. When I finally get a stand alone place, no sharing walls with fucking neighbors -- I'll invest in a true home theater setup.

I have a medium sized 1700sq ft place so the living room, kitchen, and dining room are all one space. I'd guess roughly 800sq ft rectangle is the space. Also a condo so I don't need to have that much power/sound. These little 70 watt auvio's are pretty decent for their size and type. They have 140 watts peak so I'm trying to match those perfectly. I'm thinking 300 watts max on the sub? Maybe 10 inches max? Would 12 be too much for my needs/room size? I found the klipsch 12 inch 400 watt for about 200, but I know those name brands can be lousy. I also just got a couple of stands for the speakers Dayton Audio sswb20's for under 100 for the pair.

Monolith not monoprice?

There is no "max" wattage to be aiming for on a sub.  You can never have too much subwoofer if it is properly calibrated.  If you hypothetically went overkill on the sub, it would simply be headroom you never use.

So for your room...and being in a condo...I am going to say that you want a MINIMUM 250 watt sub.

The line is called monolith by monoprice, yes.

An svs pb1000 would do u just fine i imagine.  They are 500 usd new.  But i bet you could find a used one, depending on your area, even cheaper.

But honestly, there are major tiers and levels to this hobby. You get what you pay for, more or less.  The "non casual" subwoofers from a the notable and reputable brands, start at 500 (usd) minimum (new price).  The "serious" subwoofers start around $1000 (usd).

Based of your needs, room, and budget...you could probably go with any brand of 12" subwoofer with 250 watts or more, that fits your budget...and be happy with it.

I recommend scouring classifieds and used deals to get as much sub as you can for your budget.

Edit:

Just found this on sale

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=41499

Great sub for the price.  You wouldn't be disappointed

Or this smaller one

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=9723

Id personally go for the 15"

YAY! Thanks!

This looks perfect for me. I don't know how to go about setting one though, never had one before. I doubt I'd ever have it up over halfway if that, but I'll see how that goes, lol. I just need a nice clean punchy and resounding bass for moderate to medium high levels when watching movies and listening to music. I have 2 old JBL tower speakers RCA SP4100T's, they rock as well and weigh a good 50 pounds it seems, Rms 120 and 160 max, plenty for the smaller place I have here now. It's weird going from a 2800sq ft place to 1700, but I like it. Those towers are in bedroom and hooked up to an old Denon DRA-295 100 watt stereo I found at a goodwill back on 2011. Have the Denon AVR-S540BT Receiver, 5.2 channel, 4K Ultra HD Audio in my living room with a new samsung 65in oled or qled, can't remember. Best TV I've had yet. I'll add 2 more book shelf speakers later behind me and another sub as well if the 2.1 doesn't satisfy my senses completely.

Found the 10in version that might be better since I don't need much.

This too but I think downfiring wouldn't be cool to the neighbors and I like the front firing ones with a side or back port. That seems like the sound contour I want.

Side note:
Best car stereo system (71 chevy nova 350V8 2 door) I had was a pioneer supertuner, mustang 100 watt amp and 2 JBL triax 100 or 150 watt rear deck speakers. Sharp clear punch and for the time all that was out it rocked. I didn't get into the car being a speaker cabinet thing, lol. I have had  the one large home stereo speaker in the backseat of a car before and the 2 small book shelf home speakers in the rear deck of a 76 ford galaxy 500 390V8 4 door, that dark plum/purple color, and a samsung 8 track player hooked to a stock stereo.

Personally...that 15" monolith i linked is a better price for performance.  It was only 250 usd.  I recommend that one.  You would be more than happy with it

Turning it on and adjusting its gain/volume...is not how to properly calibrate 😉

15 inches is too big for my place :smirk:.
I'm going to try a Klipsch R-100SW 10" Subwoofer, Incredibly Deep Bass and an All-digital Amplifier. If I don't like it I can send it back and try the monoprice 10 or 12 inch. I want a front firing with the port on the back or front and the klipsch has that. I don't want a floor ported one due to the neighbors and I'm sure it will be plenty of bass for me. Got it for 250.

I am sure you will be more than pleased with any sub at 250 watts or more, from any brand, like i mentioned earlier 👍

"Incredibly Deep Bass" 🤣  classic klipsch marketing

No...it has a frequency response down to only 32hz.  And it's max output is 112db(doubtful it could hit that at 32hz at dolby reference levels)

Granted the 15" monolith i linked is only down to 30hz but with double the power and a bigger woofer....for same price.

You don't get "incredibly deep bass" for 250.  You just simply don't.  Not unless buying used or DIY perhaps.

Deep bass is generally defined as 20hz and below.

That svs pb1000 can hit that territory.  But its 500 usd

Bass is non directional.  Your neighbours are going to experience bass the same way regardless of your driver orientation.

But for your listening experience, desire, equipment, needs, room and budget, i think your purchase will more than suffice and give you what you were looking for 👍

I should get it today or tomorrow. I think I'll need a pad for it. If I was still in a house I'd go for the 15 inch one. If it doesn't perform like I want I'll get another one to try. I still need some pointers on adjusting the sound with the stereo. I've never had a sub and I have a decent stereo for movies and music. I'm not familiar with all the gain and 0/180 etc...settings in regards to the -/= of bass and treble on the stereo. I guess just turn all of the adjustments all the way down and increase until the tone(s) are right to my ears? Maybe just do that to the sub since I have the sound like I like it on just the speakers?

I used to be big on home theater sound systems but in today's day and age they seem really retro and outdated. When u used to have a sub that big the whole house would shake when I played video games and like a grenade went off or something. U just get so much out of the modern sound bars and surround systems that I couldn't imagine having all these huge pedestal speakers around the space and a stereo like it's the 90s. That's why I chose to focus on surround lighting as it makes it the most immursive. But yeah u just have to dial it in remember your gonna really want different levels for different things like say a movie compared to really bassy music compared to like rock and stuff.

I used to contract with an OEM in San Diego (TC Sounds) to manufacture drivers for my custom subwoofer brand back in the early 2000's.  Incidentally, they also manufactured subs for SVS, Eclipse, and Lightning Audio amongst others, as well as handling custom pro audio stuff that you never see in stores.  I still have a handful of drivers from 8" to 18" based on their TC2+, TC9 and even a couple TC3HP motors with their patented LMT (variable density voicecoils that create a flat BL curve to minimize distortion even when the coil is at its peak distance away from the magnetic gap).  If anyone is interested in trying a build of their own, you would of course need to be comfortable designing your own enclosure and fabricating it, as well as picking out an amplifier to power the driver... but if you do it right, you'll end up with a powered sub that would wipe the floor with almost any retail option available.

I sold strictly online to home and car audio enthusiasts, and would have kept doing it, except that Chinese competition and a slow-to-pivot management ended up forcing TC Sounds out of business as their domestic labor and materials costs just couldn't compete with the overseas operations.  I couldn't find another state side producer for the product I wanted at a price I could stomach, and didn't want to use questionable foreign facilities, so I hung up that hat after a handful of years.

Yeah like I said those days are kind of done. Even for my car which is where I really go all our with the hi-fi u see that you just get so much out of the new manufactured systems that anything custom is almost stupid unless you need some type of custom build out to fit somewhere specific. My favorite speaker company rn is probably Hennessey sound designs.

Bass management is an entire hobby in itself

The rabbit hole goes DEEP (using REW: room eq wizard and a umik-1, mini dsp devices, time alignment, etc)

Ideally, it is much more involved than turning gain knobs

Most of the new receivers of past decade use room correction software that you will want to take advantage of if you have it.  The receivers come with a small microphone for this purpose.  Denon uses audyssey.

What most of these softwares try to accomplish is:

1) level match speakers and subwoofer so the sound arrives at the MLP(main listening position) at the same time at the same volume

2) eq any nulls or peaks in the frequency response of speakers and subwoofer

Problem is....unless you have the higher end models, they ONLY eq the speakers (there is different levels of the room correction audyssey.  Audyssey xt32 being the best and only in the higher end receivers)

So that makes your subwoofer placement even more critical (for optimal performance)

You can always do the subwoofer crawl

After that...here is a very beginner work flow:

Set your subs gain to roughly the mid way point to start.  Disable the subwoofer crossover by turning it all the way to the right (highest value).  You will be ideally using your receiver's brains for crossover duties.  Set phase or delay on sub to 0

Once you have that done, IF you have some form of room correction software, you are going to want to run that

Once complete, go into settings and see where the denon set subwoofer trim.  You are shooting for -10 to -11.5.  It is generally preffered to use the gain of your sub vs the pre out output of receiver.  Shooting for this negative trim accomplishes this.

Once that is complete, go into settings of denon again, For your bookshelves, i recommend setting a crossover to 100hz.  This means that you will send all frequencies below 100hz to your subwoofer.

It is also generally desirable at this point to give your subwoofer a 4 to 6db boost, post calibration.  So if you calibrated and got a -11 trim, you now bring it to -6db, for example.

As far as bass and treble tone controls on your receiver, it is generally advisable not to use them.  Unless your receiver is ancient and doesn't have any sort of room correction software

If you don't have the room correction...but have the ability to manually adjust distances and levels in the settings....get an spl meter.  You will manually measure your distances and manually adjust your levels with spl

That is a bastardized beginner guide

And to the other poster about sound bars comparing...and proper big equipment being out dated:

The hobby can get quite endless...and expensive

No sound bar or home theater in a box will ever compare to high quality stand alone speakers and big subwoofers that are properly calibrated

And then you can get into tactile transducers(i might add...this is the perfect thing to explore if you live in an apartment)

It is a fun and endless hobby.  One i have enjoyed for 30 years.

Very cool and interesting geo!!

The DIY group at avsforums has grown considerably and i lurk that forum a lot

Very cool you were involved in that side of things

Tom V. (Co founder/designer of SVS) left to create his own company.  Power Sound Audio

That is the equipment I am currently using

He has switched his entire line over to the notable B&C drivers out of Italy.  Are you familiar with them?

AVSForums is cool, got a fair amount of international clientele for my products through discussions there.  I'm not very familiar with B&C, but that shouldn't surprise you, as I have leaned toward business operations.  I saw a viable niche I could fill in the audio industry, with a high quality product and almost unparalleled customer service, and that worked well for as long as I had the relationship with TC Sounds.  Ultimately, once they (and I) closed up shop, I didn't make much effort to stay appraised of industry developments.  The lead engineer and co-owner @ TC was poached by Tymphany, one of the overseas partners they had already been working with, and he continues to work in their offices state side up near San Francisco.  They still make annual appearances at CES and a presence at NAMM (I attended as a guest at the NAMM shows a while back and saw some really cool gear!).  But these days, I'm all but out of the industry, save for having a few pints with Thilo (the "T" in TC Sounds) every now and again.

For my home theater, Thilo designed a pair of 7 foot tall line source towers utilizing ribbon tweeters and 12 point source drivers per tower, powered by Crown amps.  Using an older NAD receiver, coupled with a DSP, and a 15" ported woofer on a EP2500 amp.

I kind of get what chief is saying about the "closing of the gap" in modern audio systems.  For sure car manufacturers in particular have taken efforts to prioritize tuning their audio systems to a level that pleases the average set of ears, thereby reducing the incentive to go all out on a custom system.  But I also agree with what you're saying, that although these newer systems are often "good enough", they can't truly compete with a well tuned pro audio system.  Then again, not everyone needs that SPL or necessarily cares as much about reaching the very peak of high definition sound reproduction.

Very cool man.  Thanks for sharing

I would love to hit a NAMM show one day

I love the sound of your custom gear

Quote:

Agreed.  But problem is..."good enough" is highly subjective.

There is no theater in a box or soundbar system that would be good enough for me. Especially not when i have been rolling through high end equipment for 30 years.

And now...the internet direct market changed everything.  You can get high end, top quality gear at reasonable prices

My current setup is around $20k.  And i have demo'ed it for hardcores and casuals...and all of them are blown away/in shock, when i do.  One guy ditched his soundbar system he so venomously defended

My one friend said it blows a millionaire family members high priced dedicated theater out of the water.

But the world of audio is subjective in general.  Many are highly pleased with their over priced bose theater in a box.  And many can't or are unable to develop an appreciation for better anyway.  And if it is pleasing to their ear...that should be a win.  So I hear what you are saying and agree...for most casual people, these theaters in a box will do just fine.  And like you also say..many don't desire or need the SPL and 10hz pressurization
