Hello,

Don’t think these are subs but would like a second opinion. 🤙🏻

Habitat: woods, under low lying trees , cold and wet
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.

Gills: light brown
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.

Stem: yellow / light yellow
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

Cap: golden brown - nipple
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

Spore print color: no spore test yet
Very important!

Bruising: no evident bruising
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.

Other information: see pics

If you'd to eat third od those mushrooms, you would be dead, because it is Galerina marginata.

Last two pictures you edited in meanwhile are Hypholoma, perhaps Pholiota. Not active also.

I actually think these are Kuehneromyces mutabilis (the first 4 pics) because the caps are drying out from the centre so that the outer edge is darkest. Galerina marginata on the other hand, dries out paler from the rim towards the centre. Don't take my word for it though, and don't eat these. Even experts get confused between these species. A lot of Google images when you search for these seem to be misidentified (more so in searches for Galerina marginata as opposed to the other way around) which adds to the confusion.

What ? Absolutely not K. mutabilis. This is Galerina. Kuehneromyces mutabilis is basically a Pholiota in appearance, especially the cap. Lower stem is REALLY scaly. Gills are not this color. Hygrophanicity of the caps, I don't anything about it, I suppose it can go both ways.

This is bona fide K.mutabilis:

As for other Kuehneromyces species, I highly doubt it, but they might come close, especially lignicola. This is still Galerina though.

The pics are slightly out of focus, and the caps and the stems lose their Pholiota type appearance as they age. I don’t think they’re always as easy to differentiate as you think.

Just to show how similar they can look to Galerina marginata, here’s a Kuehneromyces I found a few years ago…

There are a lot of young mushrooms here so I believe many would be covered in veil like young K.M. is. Although you are right and most are out of focus so perhaps I can't see it. But shaggy and scaly lower stem remains, and mushroom he's holding in #3 seems to me like a typical Gal. Sometimes Gals have that flocculose, almost scaly mycelium at the lower stem, but still not quite like the one Kuehneromyces has. I'm also accustomed on seeing Kuehneromyces in thick, fascicular, Armillaria like clusters, this is all over the place.

I am not sure where does the myth that K.M. and Galerina marginata are close lookalikes comes from, and that only with cap fading effect can be identified correctly. Seems like the tricks I've read about distinguishing Psathyrella delineata and Psathyrella rugocephala, which according to google searches and google images look indistinguishable. Actually it is only Psathyrella delineata on google, and rugocephala is a typical Lacrymaria.

I think people have no strong (or any) concept of some species and go by google searches, which is not correct in most cases.

And not trying to be a smartass now, but your collection also looks like Galerina to me. Even with what you'd call reverse fading effect which I think is also present in Galerina so it can't be used as a diagnostic criterion for Kuehneromyces. I know of only 3-4 species of Kuehnies and it took me awhile to learn how to tell them apart, and yours look like none of them. Have you done microscopy on your mushroom ?
I could change my mind if you provide me in situ photos, where I can observe the stem much better and can zoom in, also these seem to have a very orangish gills, but it's artificial lighting.

Sorry for long post, but here's one more example of the TRUE K.M. not Google interpretation but Alan's observation:

And not to cherry pick ones with rich veil, here's one that lost it:

No I haven't done microscopy on that one. This was way back years ago. I thought it was Galerina marginata, but Alan Rockefeller ID'd it as Kuehneromyces, and in that thread he did say that the 'reverse fading effect' could be used as a diagnostic criterion for Kuehneromyces, or words to that effect...

Alan am i correct in saying that the direction that the hygrophanous cap dries is not indicative of the species?

No.

Also the spore print, as you can see in the pic, is what I would call cinnamon-red, not rusty brown, and is very similar to the spore prints from more obvious Kuehneromyces I have collected since.

Not that my opinion matters......... But in all the years foraging for edibles in the woods I have come across so fucking many galerina, I have never seen one hygrophanous from the inside out. They all have been drying from the margin inwards.

Well that is why MO is good for, you upload it and people vote. Seems to me there is no consensus on your mushroom. Alan's opinion is obviously more valuable than mine or some other people, but we're entitled to it. I would like to see your mushroom in natural lighting and while still unpicked to make my mind about it. With this only I think it is Galerina, but it's simply not enough for me to say with high certainty. It is not the subject of this thread anyway, nor my primary concern right now, what I am more sure of is identity of OPs mushrooms.

Your opinion matters. But now you thrown yourself into ID beef :dumblol:

I would say you didn't pay close attention on this effect every time. You can find in just a few minutes observations online from descent and experienced identifiers with pictures that exibit reverse fading effect (I coined this term, I don't know if there's a name for it, inside-out in your terms).
Like this one, you can obviously see in what direction fading is going:
https://mushroomobserver.org/480651?q=1nCa8

I already voiced my opinion on what is going on, when people find Galerina with reverse fading effect, they call it Kuehneromyces, due to a circulating myth that fading effect is diagnostically relevant. And if there is one Galerina with it, it's not. And there are plenty Galerinas with it. What is relevant is overall appearance and microscopy. So I think your mushroom book Dug is correct, and true Galerina is shown there. I won't argue further, I stated my case, and if we disagree, alright then.

To be fair, I've been scrolling through some pics on iNaturalist, and at least some of the Galerinas appear to be drying from the inside out, and I would say they're definitely Galerina. So maybe I have been misinformed.

However, I still think that some older Kuehneromyces can be deceptive.
