Car insurance advice?
    #2777451 - 06/09/04 09:25 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

What do you do when car insurance costs more then the payments for the car itself?

I am for the first time ever setting up my own insurance for hubby and I, but the accident he had two years ago and the fact that he is "under-age" is making our insurance top out at $300 a month!!   That is with the lowest level plan too.

Looks like we've hit another bump in the road... amazing how a persons past can continuously manage to haunt like that.

Any advice?  I haven't checked with any other insurance places yet, but the lady regretfully said that it probably wouldn't be much lower anywhere else.

thanks

No...we don't own a house. *sigh* We're trying so hard to get on our feet together, but it's difficult.

i think if you take a defensive driving course they will lower it a little.
and sporty-er cars also hike up the cost.

get a crappy car, or better known as a "beater" and just get liability. if you cant afford that, then see if you can just pay the uninsured motorist fee if its available in your state. but then again you do run the risk of getting in an accident and getting screwed. just make sure you drive careful

i go through this shit all the time, i got a DUI 6 years ago and its forever haunting me and my wallet! luckily i shopped around and just found a good rate, only 140 a month for full coverage. i was paying 300 for a while

Look into registering the car and insurance in your name. Insurance is usually less expensive for women.

Are you looking for coverage above the most basic liability?  If so, I don't know what to tell ya because i refuse to pay for any more insurance than i am legally obligated to.

I get insurance through Progressive and it costs me about $70-80 a month for basic liability on an '84 buick century.  I am a 22yr old male.  My record wasn't exactly squeaky either.  Several speeding tickets.  Leaving the scene of an accident.  (I hit a stop sign.....what was i supposed to do, stay there and make sure it was ok?)

Get a quote from Progressive.  What they do is hook you up with an insurer somewhere relatively close to you (like no more than a state or two away) and they find you the best price avaliable.
Whatever you do, don't go to those bastards like State Farm or Farmers because it's gonna co$t ya.

Thanks guys,

This week is going to be entirely about shopping around! Apparently lots of people are switching to Farmers right now, because they are having all time low rates on their car insurance. I'll try calling there tomorrow.

1-800-PROGRESSIVE

I guarantee you Farmer's "all-time low" will still be rape in comparison.

Good luck!  I am moving to Seattle soon and I'm contemplating not even taking my car.  Parking there costs money and public trans. is great.  Organized crime is alive and well and it's called insurance!

man, you guys need to go to an insurance agent... thier everywhere... they re-sell insurance, so they get you the lowest rates... they search all the local insurance companies to see what's cheapest, then they get a commission... sometimes they might cost, maybe $35 or so... but my girlfriend and i got insurance for 350 for 6 months on a 79 nova, and she has a recent accident, and a previous driving without a licence when she was 17, and a bunch of other crap... she's a horrible driver, she scares me, really...

also, my mom, brother, and i are insured on 3 cars, for like $380 for 6 months. I called the insurance company directly when i was getting it on my gf's car, and they wanted like 500 for 6 months, but when i called the insurance agent, it was like 400, but then only $350 if i paid it all at one time.... progressive and gieco, those bastards wanted like $8-900.
