I thought "they" had acknowledged that the vaccines carry some risk. Maybe I'm thinking of a different "they" though.

Point is that not getting vaccinated carries its own risk because exposure to the disease is pretty much unavoidable. If it was actually more risky to get the vaccine than not to get it, it would be surprising for most experts to say the opposite is true, barring a massive conspiracy or something. JohnnyTripsAlot doesn't believe there is any such conspiracy from what I gather though.

Also, most of the long term risks associated with contracting covid are also currently unknown. Not that getting immunized against it prevents infection altogether, but still.
People potentially could be fucked to varying degrees either way. No way to know rn.

But we do know there’s a demographic of vulnerable people in the population at moderate-to-high risk of developing severe complications up to dying from untreated covid.

That, among other reasons, is why it’s kinda silly to be hearing the premature risk/benefit ratio arguments from both the people in the antivaxx crowd, and to a lesser extent, the provaxx crowd.

Not everything is black or white right or wrong. If all but the fringe of medical research says that the risk from getting the shot is less than the risk one is exposed to if they don't get the shot, across a wide range of ages, how else does it come about that only the fringe got it right and most of the experts got it wrong? The more likely explanation is that the fringe got it wrong, barring a broad conspiracy to concoct false results.

The personal risk to you from not getting the shot is likely low and it may be an acceptable risk to you. I don't really give a shit if you get it, and there's a good chance you will be fine if you don't. You may not care about people at greater risk from the disease than you are, and nobody else can make you care about them. But if you want to claim that it's riskier to get the shot than it is not to get the shot, you're making a claim that's at odds with the facts and it should be called out.

I believe there is a conspiracy orchestrated by the government of Russia to covertly influence public opinion in many other nations to sow chaos and division, and that these efforts have been quite successful.

It’s not about the individual risk. It’s about the aggregate risk. Practically every unvaccinated person who died of covid last year thought they would be fine not getting vaccinated. A million people who made a very poor choice and ended up in a hospital getting tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical care paid for with taxpayer money because they weren’t responsible enough to get a $20 shot that would have kept them from getting very sick.
