The news can be are wrong sometimes, and commercial cable news is generally pretty loaded with editorial bias, but this realization seems to be so worldshaking for some people that they flock to information sources with far less credibility. Often they compare it to the scene in The Matrix where Neo takes a red pill, causing him to wake up to the true reality that the world is much shittier than he had previously thought.



Being "redpilled" is good to these people, but "woke" is somehow bad although it works on pretty much an identical awakening metaphor (awakened to the wrong viewpoints I guess.) From what I've seen, the "redpilling" process goes something like this:

Mainstream news/expertise can be trusted unquestioningly => Mainstream news/expertise can be wrong => Mainstream news/expertise is always wrong (the "redpilling" switch-flipping moment occurs somewhere around here) => Contrarian news/expertise can be trusted unquestioningly

A lot of people progress from step 1 to step 2 by the time they finish high school, and more or less stay there. Healthy skepticism in evaluating information and information sources. The experts can be wrong, but that doesn't mean that they are always wrong and the fringe "experts" are always right.

But the late bloomers seem to be more susceptible to this "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" redpilling moment. They went through more of their lives before it occurred to them that the information sources they had previously trusted were fallible, so the experience was especially jarring. In reality they haven't really progressed in critical thinking much beyond step 1 though. They're just drinking from a different tap now.
