over picking a cow field.
    #2770906 - 06/07/04 06:00 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

would this be considered over picking?
the main field i go to is broken up into three different 50 acre fields and as usuall the farmer rotates his cows. on our first hunt we picked the first field, leaving really old cubes and ones that had not broken veils. on the second hunt we moved to the second field and did the same, leaving a few here and there.
yesterday we went to the third field ( where the cows are ratm) and left the same young ones and old ones.

so after 3 hunts in 8 days we found atleast 500-600 cubes ( haven't posted pics of yesterdays hunt but it was good) on all 3 fields combined. is that picking so many that they wont be back next year? even if we left plenty to drop future spores?
would you suggest giving the field a break untill this fall mabey?
thanks for any repies.

also could anyone give me tips on how not to over pick a field?
precautions you yourself take?

thanks matts, thats kinda what i was thinking. but me and some other people got into a debate about the fact that i was going to "rape" that field by picking to many, i really did not think i was doing to much harm.

Yeah, I would tap each muchroom on the cap a few times to give myself a better feeling about picking.

i kinda think taping is a myth, but im not sure.
when i pick i try to use cardboard box top so i can just lay the mushrooms all in one direction and not have them pilled on top of one another, my theroy (just a theory) is that keeping them expossed to the air dissperses spores as i walk around, i dont know though.
also after picking that many my hands are purple with spores so i know any thing i touch gets a healthy dose of spores from me.

i dont think you can overpick a field

i also think "thumping caps" is a myth too

when the spores drop the wind will carry them

Over-picking is a reality in my experience.

It doesn't happen after just 5-10 pickings, but, if you hit the same field 50 times a summer and 20 times a winter (im in southwest florida) then it honestly begins to show after doing this for a few seasons in a row. And that is just from picking from fields of which only i would pick from, the impact is magnified much-more when dozens and dozens of people are raiding a field cosistantly.

See, you have 100 acre field which is producing shrooms: typically, not all 100 acres of that field are suitable for shroom-growth, some spots just aren't sweet enough for shrooms to want to grow: so, out of 100 acres, 40 of those acres you find shrooms on: after you pick a few thousand Cubensis and a few thousand Copelandia's from those cow patties, then the next year you will in fact notice that maybe you lost about 5 acres worth of shroom-producing areas: and so-on, until (honestly & literally) the once kick-ass shroom field is now a less than mediocre shroom-producer.

Each and every Cubensis or Copelandia is like a little soldier, fighting all the other competitor mushrooms, fungus, bacterias ect., and when you pull a shroom out of the field you are also taking thousands of spores out of that field that would have dropped in the field for the next generation.

My theory is easier to understand if you don't look at a shroom-field as a bunch of individual cow dungs, but looking at the field as a whole: one big terrainium.. and i have seen it happen before my very eyes over the course of several seasons going to the same fields hundreds and hundreds of times. The shrooms (and their spores) "move" and "shift" away from competitors (shroom-hunters), and they won't just grow anywhere, because the entire surface of a pastureland is not suitable to their likings, and when you shut them out of all their favorite spots, then they tend to just, dissappear.

Keep shroomin,
GG

Thumping the caps on the other hand is not a reality.

The spores are naturally released from a shroom-cap over-time and on their own time.
When you thump a cap, it does nothing but aggitate the shroom; would you like it if a giant person 100 times taller than you came up to you and thumped you on the head?

Anyways, the shrooms release the spores only on their own time. And if you take the shroom out of the field than you are also taking their spores out of the field.

Also, picking shrooms from a cow-patty does not stimulate growth, it hinders the growth of more mushrooms that the patty could have produced had no shroom-hunter came along and disrupted the cow patts mycelial network.
They say that some mycorhizzal species of mushrooms growing from tree-roots are stimulated to fruit more mushrooms after someone harvest them, but the same is not true for Cubes/Copes and other coprophilus (dung loving) mushrooms.

So, each shroom is a little soldier fighting for its life out there..

Which ever you please. There are millions of spores on the feild anyway. Spores cause the fungal's growth sort of by freak chance, so the chances are robbing the feild a couple thousand spores doesn't really effect the chance of the other ones producing mushroom growth eventually, but that one mushroom you took might have that 1 spore that could make a huge patch of mushrooms!

i am 100% with GGreatOne. 1 shroom will not hinder a fields production.

going 3 and 4 times a week, sometimes multiple times a day during a summer WILL hinder the shrooms for the next season. this happened to us this season. it used to be nothing to go out and pick a wal mart bag full right after a rain, or a few healthy doses while dry. these fields currently have produced 2 and 3 shrooms per hunt this season.

i think if you completely go overboard with the field, youll ruin it.

best thing to do is pick just enough for the people planning to trip. if your tryin to dry and save them, just dont pick too many. try to go only for the ones with VERY mature level caps that are almost curved upward. you know those have dropped offspring and have little time left on this earth. just be wise about your picking and youll be fine.

congrats on the find

Take a few prints and scatter them across the field and THEN take a break, better chances of even more mushrooms than before
