There aren't too many observations per year of this species, so it's good to spread the awareness. Also there are probably not too many hunting or trying to find this species actively, because of the more easily available psychoactive species out there and some might be afraid of hunting these due to the deadly species in the genuses Conocybe and Pholiotina. Ofcourse I don't recommend going after Pholiotina cyanopus for a beginner who has a hard time differentiating or identifying little brown mushrooms in general, but once you find them the first time and study the key features this species becomes quite easy to identify even without picking them or seeing the blue bruising on the stipe. Also the known deadly poisonous species like Pholiotina rugosa or Conocybe tenera don't look anything like Pholiotina cyanopus. They're both generally larger and taller species, the former having also an annulus which lacks in Ph. cyanopus. Ofcourse there are probably other toxic species in these genuses and they're also a bit poorly known genuses, but I'm yet to find an exact look-a-like and as fragile species as Pholiotina cyanopus and I've handled a lot of Conocybe and Pholiotina species for comparison since I found these first time in 2014. If one finds a suspected Pholiotina cyanopus, I really really recommend getting familiar with the odor which has been very helpful key for identification if the stem breaks and you lose the blueing base of the stem. Most macroscopic descriptions of this species mention the odor being "not distinctive", but I strongly disagree with that and no other Conocybe or Pholiotina I've observed have had an odor anything similiar or as strong as this species.

Yea gotta build that photo archive and collections. Last year I collected 450+ specimens and oh man was it awesome! It's starting to build up now in here, I've gotten around 30 specimens so far and everytime I go checking for them they have increased in numbers. It's nice to know now they occur in the same place, last year I missed the couple first weeks on the roadside hunt. Let's double the numbers this year!

Shame about your habitat stopped producing fruits. I'm pretty sure thought you will bump into them again at some point as you seem to find them in your P. semilanceata habitats. I've tried them a few times now and so far I've enjoyed it alot. Strong but smooth mellow ride without the P. semilanceata "mindfuck" and no nausea whatsoever. I'm planning on donating a collection into a local herbarium this year aswell.

Here's one general habitat photo. These mushrooms grow on the side of the road here in the countryside of Northern Savonia, Finland.


They appear on the sandy part along the roadside and some of them also hide in the low vegetation. Gotta say the assumed rareness has taken a bit of a hit for me now as they appeared in the same place as last year and in great numbers again. I observed them also last year about 5km away from my house around a roadside parking area.

The only habitat I found went from 100 to 5 to 1 to 0 and then never returned. I hope yours will last a long time! But you seem to be finding new spots on your yard and the surrounding terrain, am I correct?

Cheers knarkkorven! After the previous finds they disappeared completely. It was very hot and dry July, +30 degrees celsius all the time and no rains whatsoever. Now there has been some rains and the temps dropped a bit. They are back!



Ten specimens or so observed on a short walk. Looks promising!

I've been finding them last year way away from my nearby habitats, but not in great numbers yet. I've been eyeballing my yard everyday and hoping they will appear this year aswell, hopefully in greater numbers.
You will bump into them again eventually, got to keep up the faith.
