Re: Increasing minimum wage.. [Re: anatomality] * 5

Here's a short history to help folks understand the problem:

A while ago: The min wage was set
The next year: Cost of living went up
The next year: We argued about raising the min wage
The next year: Cost of living went up
The next year: We argued about raising the min wage
The next year: Cost of living went up
The next year: We argued about raising the min wage
This year: Cost of living went up

No one is even asking for a raise here, just a reversal of the pay cuts they've been getting for the last 20 years.

Minimum wage peaked in late 60s at about $12 in todays dollars. If we set it to that and made it so that it went up with inflation, that might help.

Why are businesses suppose to subsidize people who are not worth the higher wages? That's why we have a government and taxes. UBI is the only solution to the idea that people should all be able to live even if they're disabled or too depressed to contribute enough energy to even support themselves. The business that should be paying the standard living wage is your fucking government.

Official US inflation, the downplayed number, this year is 4.12%
This year alone that $15 should come up $0.62 to keep up with inflation.

If you dont correct income for inflation you are setting people up for incremental paycheque cuts.

I don't think I've ever got such a small raise every year. My wage has far outpaced inflation and I'm not trying that hard to chase money.

I would hardly make 19 an hour at only 5% increase per year over the last nearly 20 years.

You are on another level of capability, you're not stuck at minimum wage.

Lets ignore the many reasons why someone may be stuck at a minimum wage job, and take just a simple example of them: Low IQ.

At which IQ is it OK to take peoples freedom away by paying them insufficiently to fend for themselves?

what freedoms are being taken away due to low-level intelligence?

and @bod, the usa govt already meets peoples needs if they fall below the poverty line. for example, food stamps, sec 8 housing, etc. even utility companies offer low-income programs to help with the cost of electricity, gas, water, etc.

You're misreading it.

If you pay someone a wage they cant live off, you are taking their freedom because paying a fulltime employee less than is needed to get by is serfdom, inbetween freedom and slavery.

yeah, but those jobs are all at-will employment. no one is forced to earn minimum wage. its a choice.

now, speaking about people with disabilities (intelligence or physical or otherwise), these folks are eligible for many gov't programs to help make ends meet.

Define low IQ.  mentally handicapped or just a little slow?

The freedom of opportunity in the United States is the freedom to make your way, or stay where you’re at.  If somebody decides to stay in their current situation, that’s on them.

Thats what I'm saying. Thats another level of capability. Sustained effective commitment, such as Bodhi showed, is a skill not all have.

Impaired enough to be or feel stuck at a minimum wage job, but not as impaired as to need assisted living.

The freedom of opportunity in the United States is the freedom to make your way, or stay where you’re at.  If somebody decides to stay in their current situation, that’s on them.

If a person has diminished capacity, for instance someone with low IQ, or with issues, like a war vet, rape victim or sufferer of fibromyalgia, and despite of this manages to hold a minimum wage job, his earnings should be enough to live off.

The USA like any nation is comprised of a majority of partially dysfunctional people, and some of those are impaired in ways that are hard to employ. There must be a place to thrive for them too.

"If somebody decides to stay in their current situation, that’s on them." not everybody has that upward mobility, either by ability or by opportunity.

yeah, but how well can a dysfunctional person thrive?

im all for giving everyone a chance to succeed no matter the disadvantages they may face, but some folks will never "thrive"

i used to work in healthcare and those individuals need higher wages, not mcdonalds workers.

disabled peoples that have jobs usually only do so to get out of the house. its not so that they can earn a living or else we would see many more of them out and about.

So what?  Sounds like the people your describing already have a social worker, are recieving welfare and disability and are making another 7.25 an hour.  These imaginary people you’re describing are still being go getters.

Somebody should calculate what the minimum wage would be if it got annual increases to account for inflation. My guess is that it will be around $15.

I've read it would be $44/hr if it were tied to the stock market.

mcdonalds is actually big in the zero carb/carnivore community, the beef patties are 100% beef and not fried in vegetable oils, and you can order 1/4 pounder patties only for cheap, so if you are travling its easier to just get mcdonalds than cook enough food beforehand and keep it in a cooler, ive seen some of them call mcdonalds modern day pemican

oh okay, sounds perfectly healthy then. go ahead, eat i as your primary food intake and see what happens.

good luck

you guys really think the beef has other stuff in it? food and advertising laws are pretty strict, they wouldnt be able to say that if it wasnt, and also, if the community that revolves their identity around eating meat says its acceptable to eat mcdonalds patties, id trust them about as much as I trust this communities collective wisdom around mushrooms

there are polos that exist that are 100% sugar. the packet says zero sugar.
you have too much faith in people that will do anything for your money and do not care about what happens to you in the mean time.

this reminds me of how everybody is mocking california for their new warning labels because the food companies with offending foods told them to
