Is this good?
    #26201732 -

Hey guys just wanted to make sure this was ready to roll. PE from a MS with coco coir as the sub. Looks good but there is a very slight sour scent and not fully colonized yet. Spawned 9/9/19. Thanks guys

My myc never looks quite like that. Sounds like it might be bacterial

Why do you have duct tape over the holes..?

Looks good, the super white fluffy is from very high moisture.
I don’t see any yellowing of surface water so I don’t think it’s fighting anything.
Give it some air to breath and I bet it will start to knot up fast.

One tek or tutorial I saw said to seal off the tub while colonizing. I cling wrapped the top as well. Done this with a mono before. It has been a minute though

Yep it probably told you to seal it up to increase CO2 inside the tub.  Research moves fast and that’s considered outdated these days.  Many seem to put straight to fruiting conditions and allow it to colonize with fresh air.

Others tape the holes for easier mixing in the tub while leaving the lid gap open for air exchange.

Thanks for the info. Doesn’t it also decrease the likelihood of contamination by sealing it off?

No. If you get contamination, it was in your spawn to begin with. You could burp and sneeze would be fine if the spawn was clean.

I do not think it looks good. It may be fine but it looks rather suspicious indeed. I've never seen myc, even if entirely too wet, act like that. We'll soon find out though.

Def looks bacterial.

My first reaction was to question whether anyone her has ever grown, but then after thinking I wonder if this is a PE specific thing.  This looks exactly how no FAE 100%+ RH aggressive PE often looks.  It’s the tomatose? (I bet I’m using that wrong) version of rhizomorphic aerial mycelium.  Tons of fresh air and this is all going to lay down and knot.

I can tell you from experience it’s not displaying any signs of bacteria because the bacteria defenses are a tan to brown metabolite combined with a thick ‘mushroom skin’ type growth change.  Based on the substrate I’m currently birthing that was made of shitty overfilled “fuck it or dump it!” Jars that got a light touch of the bacteria.

Yeah, I decided to trash it unfortunately. The scent was getting worse and the more I looked at the mycelium, it didn't look right. I have another tub and that seems to be looking normal with a couple yellow water droplets. Hopefully FAE fixes it up. I'll try to keep you guys posted. Any help is always appreciated. Thanks again.

ah. that's sad. Now we'll never know. You don't have to trash shit that "might be bad". The overwhelming fear of the dreaded spore load is a little over dramatic. You can just leave them and see what happens. You learn more that way.

mr stygian knight, you wonder if any of us have grown? What! Don't be ridiculous. Also, Bacteria is always present and there are myriad sorts of bacteria and ways that myc could respond to the myriad sorts and amounts of bacteria is myriad as well. So, Don't be so sure.

That’s unfortunate, I hope raccoons or squirrels like PE!

Yes there’s lots of ways the myc can respond, thus positive confirmation of a contam is always better.  Fluffy myc isn’t a positive confirmation of a contam.

Bad bacteria doesn’t commingle like molds and generally either the bacteria or the mycelium win nutrients, hence in jars the mycelium curves around bacteria and a shaken jar will completely die and not return as the bacteria takes over everything.

Thus when battling bacteria you can generally find a specific battle ground or slimey bacteria eaten grain.  Perhaps there was one under his substrate but it wasn’t visible.  This is one of the many reasons for clear sides, easier to see the whole sub to inspect for odd spots.
