So, this house explosion in Charlotte, NC......

does not make any sense.  The investigators still know nothing.


But how does the house explode with no single sign of burn or char anywhere.  How could a house possibly become so pressurized that it creates such a "blast?"  Looking at photos/video of the scene, there has not been an exposed piece of lumber or other material that shows signs of fire, burn, etc....Propane or Natural Gas would have caught on fire, no?  a pilot somewhere, or simply the buildup of fumes like within a linseed oil-soaked rag.


Can anyone offer a rational explanation for this?  i'm truly puzzled and intrigued.

Large basement meth lab? Firedept tweets call it a structural collapse, so perhaps whatever caught the boom'z left most of the charring buried in the rekd foundation + buried under the rest of the structure of the house.

..way to celebrate 4th of july early..

Exploded flashpowder crackers sometimes have the inside of their paper tubes entirely un-charred while being thermobaric explosions.

If an explosion happens fast enough, the explosive burns and not much else.

Interesting.  i work with fire, but i've never done anything with chemical compounds, fireworks, etc....thanks for the info.


i'm still quite intrigued and look forward to the findings of the investigation.

If they had a hydrogen/oxygen welder in the basement and the hydrogen bottle sprung a leak, that would be a fast and forceful explosion.

Yeah the pressure wave from a hydrogen explosion goes well beyond the flames. Pretty fun to fill a balloon with 2 parts hydrogen and one part oxygen and light it on fire. Makes a flash of flame and a bigass woosh

There was a house explosion near me pretty recently. It was from gas and the pictures didn't show any fire damage, not to the outside of the house anyways. It blew the roof off and pushed the walls out. Kind of bowed them all out so they are rounded. I think the explosion happened and then the gas meter realized that it needs to turn off gas to the house and shut down so it wasn't a fire.

People SERIOUSLY underestimate how far south just a bit of hydrogen/oxygen mix can go if merely ignited. I believe these students might have ruptured some eardrums:





We're moving towards a hydrogen economy but, so y'all know the power of hydrogen as a storage of energy.

This is why terrorists in the middle east like to add cylinders of hydrogen to their roadside IED's, it adds a wallop.

No. If the gas is well mixed with the air, the gas gets completely consumed very quickly. You get a massive explosion without much fire. The house is completely destroyed without enough time for the flashover to ignite any solid material.

When houses explode due to a gas leak, it can be so violent the explosion can often be heard for a dozen miles.

Had house blow up by me a few years ago.  I live in the city, houses are stacked up on top each other, not very far apart.  This explosion was 2 blocks down my side road, across the main street and one block to the left.  I'd say 1/4 mile away ish?  The shock wave pressurized my house and fluttered all of my curtains.  It was summer so all my windows were down and there curtains at every window blew like a HUGE gust of wind.  Investigators came to the conclusion that scrappers had broken into the house and stole copper.  In the process they opened a natural gas line.  The explosion leveled the house and broke the windows out of almost every house on the block.  There were no signs of burnt material.  Just a literal pile of rubble.
