Wasted potential, is it a thing? * 1
    #26083023 -

So I just got halfway through watching a YouTube video about a guy who spent 2 years building a quad-core processing computer in Mincraft. It's the size of a city and is essentially a virtual example of what original computers looked like.

And all it did was piss me the fuck off. Here I am, all but useless, and this guy is spending his immense brainpower making a computer from 1956 inside a videogame.

My question is, what makes potential wasted? How about the guy who invented the Straandbeast, a mechanical genius creating useless machines that walk across beaches. If something you create is essentially art, is it still a waste of time? Can time ever be truly wasted? Does it matter if what you create is unique or innovative or amazing?

Idk guys, all I know is 15 minutes in I wanted to beat the shit out of him. If we actually focused all the creative and intellectual energies of humanity into beneficial areas, we could solve almost any problem imaginable. But instead, motherfuckers be making calculators out of virtual wool and wiring.

seems kind of dumb to get so mad over.  if it makes him happy, is it really a waste?

We all decompose in the end.  So perhaps decomposing as late as possible and living well s all that matters.  To many, perhaps only a method of fearing mortality, religion offers a belief that this life of the material is not true existence.  Which sorta leads back to that we all decompose, but in the beginning and no longer "the end".

I see what you're saying. We have the potential to turn this planet into pretty much heaven on earth, where everyone has food, water, healthcare, community support, ability to travel, etc. Instead we spend our time fighting and doing weird and seemingly pointless things, like what you described.

I don't think these types of creative endeavors are necessarily a waste, having outlets to express ourselves (even with weird shit) can be therapeutic while living on what increasingly appears to be a doomed planet. It's a shame so little time is spent on making this world a better place, but a lot of people doing that work find true meaning in it, and that's not something many of us can say about our jobs. The 'be the change' philosophy offers a solution to so many causes of distress.

People are NOT going to get along and just let anyone and everyone live to the same standards.  History shows that very clearly.  In America, it's been assumed that's the goal.  Yet it was only ever meant for WASPs.

A lot of the outer turmoil I see with people seems to mirror the inner turmoil of the mind, for myself at least. Even in hippy communes and small well meaning communities, power dynamics occur and the 'pure' ideals almost always seem to become corrupted. Similair to that new years resolution to start living better, there's such complexity in everything that having reality meet the ideal expectation is often an enormous grind, with small mistakes or moments of weakness posing long-term damage or at least temporary regression.

I do think if everyone worked on themselves first and foremost, becoming more self-aware of their place in the universe and mindful of the very real reactions that stem from their every action, then things would get better.

Quick? No. Likely? No, probably impossible. The things is, taking this approach to your own life, and leading by example, can be pretty damn freeing.

People currently lack the brain power.  Certain brainwave functions are much more that reality.  But not even science is there yet.

The world holds onto a lot of bullshit.  People by large choose beliefs over facts.  Then kill eachother over those beliefs.

I'm not sure that brain power has as much to do with it as upbringing, which all too often is focused primarily on conforming and becoming individually successful in society, instead of actually becoming a healthy happy and helpful human. Some of the lowest IQ people I know are also some of the nicest and most caring, but at the same time I doubt many of those at the tiki-torch rallies are sporting PhD's.

Brain waves are a whole different ball game, even a phone to your ear alters them (although likely to no behavioral effect). No doubt goverments have weaponized ways to pump out something to mess with them, who knows if/when it will/have be deployed. Kind of strange to think about what virtually is a form of mind control we've already developed, and what that actually says about free will and consciousness.

Which comes back to potential. Human potential has created some truly disturbing things that are in direct contrast to the immense potential for love and altruism and creativity brought about by that same potential. It seems a yin and yang, like so much else in life, so maybe no potential is truly wasted.

For all you know hes some retired engineer just having a bit of fun in his free time. Hardly something that would require 'immense brainpower' to do if you know exactly what you're attempting to replicate.

Of course not everyone has the same opportunities and capabilities. Decisions and circumstances that have brought you to this point are certainly to be weighed, as well as physical limitations. I think those of us who aren't particularly gifted in any apparent way, still have way more potential than the majority ever even realizes, let alone puts to real use. Much of it is hidden in pockets which only open up when one sets out on a path initially filled with utmost uncertainty.

The very fast that you describe being profoundly upset by the comparison you've outlined tell me there's a deeper connection for unclaimed potential in some aspect of yourself that has likely been shrouded in avoidance or self-deception of some sort, and the subconscious is calling out for a course correction.

There's always  time. Until there isn't.

Wasted potential is definitely a thing. People used to ask me how I was so talented for my age back when I made music. Now Tyler The Creator is younger than me. BUT comparison is the thief of happiness. That and music shut the door in my face when the world took my hands

I will admit I'm probably projecting my frustration with the world at large at this guy. Idk why we do this to ourselves, but I really dislike space travel and exploration, but for some reason insist on watching videos and reading articles about it. We have so many amazing technologies that are right there within grasp, things that could save our planet before our seemingly inevitable self-destruction. And people are trying to send potatoes to a giant dead rock millions of miles away.

It's not as though I believe we can suddenly become universally altruistic, but amazing technology is often created for purely military or profit-driven reasons. Just because someone makes a buck off of it doesn't make it any less world-changing. I just have a lot of trouble accepting that things are getting really bad on this planet and we are doing so little to stop it

Is it wasted potential coming to a forum and talking about a guy that actually did something?

or having 6000 posts on a mushroom website

like you could of been out there learning or inventing something to help humans but you were sitting on a computer posting away..

You are arguably helping more people with lots of posts on a mushroom website. What this website actually IS has lots of implications honestly. Maybe you can reach out...past the 0's and 1's? Until then this is the best we have.

Millions of manhours spent developing Minecraft, deploying and maintaining servers, burning tens of millions of kWh of energy, all so people can waste their potential playing with textured voxels and making youtube videos to drag others down with them.

"Wasted potential is watching Minecraft videos on Youtube!" he sanctimoniously posted on a recreational drug forum.

Of course there are less pessimistic ways of looking at it. But really, IMHO, 'wasted potential' is an empty term used by people when they don't approve of what someone else is doing and can't come up with any constructive feedback.  Watch all the Minecraft videos you want dude, I don't give a fuck what you do with your free time.  Brilliant ideas are often squashed in implementation anyway.

Yeah big insults guys, I already said my potential to actually do something is small to non-existent. Gotta love internet tough guys though, y'all make the world go round these days

But I'm curious, what kind of 'constructive criticism' did you even have in mind? Isn't that exactly what I'm saying? That he's brilliant and his understanding of computer programming combined with sheer drive could help change the world? That seems like the definition of constructive criticism. What did he accomplish, what did he learn? Even I can say my time on this website has taught me many things. Arguably his intention was to make YouTube videos interesting and popular enough to make a living on it. But that has certainly not panned out and there are many more efficient ways to use computer programming knowledge to make money. He could actually make video games ffs.

I don't accept the lame af argument that just because you or I aren't solving the energy crisis means we can't see the potential of others to do the same. By that logic, essentially nobody can make commentary on anything but one or two subjects

by definition, potential can't be wasted.  potential is potential is potential.  it is neither wasted nor created/produced.  it just is until something more comes of it.....or doesn't.

I would say, yeah, that is wasted talent in my opinion. But its really up to the individual themselves. If that's what they want build, you cant exactly force them not to

Big part of progress is having the motivation toward a specific goal like finding a cure for cancer or something noble like that. If you don't have that drive that all successful super-talented/super-intelligent people have, then your talent will not be used to its full potential and is essentially "lost" to our interests.

I heard this one story of a guy who took the IQ test, scored a genius level but decided his lot in life was being a truck driver  Wasted intelligence but hey what can you do, they are an independent person with their own specific or non-specific goals in life.
