A harrowing new climate change report warns we may be on the way to extinction, claiming there is a “high likelihood” human civilization will come to an end by 2050 unless action is taken on greenhouse gas emissions.

The dire paper, which predicts a biblical-like scenario of devastating floods, drought, famine and a breakdown in international order, has been endorsed by the former chief of Australia’s military.

The analysis, published May 30 by Australian think tank the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration, calls for a new approach to climate change and paints a bleak picture of the world in 30 years if nothing is done to combat greenhouse emissions.

Assuming we stay on our current trajectory, emissions will lock in a 3 degree Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) global warming, setting off a disastrous chain off events which the report’s authors claim will lead to “a high likelihood of human civilization coming to an end.”

According to the report’s central “2050 scenario,” one billion people will be forced to relocate from unlivable conditions while food production will become inadequate to feed the global population, as first reported by VICE.

North America will suffer from devastating weather extremes including wildfires, heatwaves and drought — while other places in the world such as the Middle East and West Africa will become unlivable.

Meanwhile, 55% of the global population would be subjected to more than 20 days a year of lethal heat conditions, “beyond the threshold of human survivability.”

“This scenario provides a glimpse into a world of ‘outright chaos’ on a path to the end of human civilization and modern society as we have known it, in which the challenges to global security are simply overwhelming and political panic becomes the norm,” the authors claim.

The report, meant to serve as a briefing for policymakers, comes with a forward from retired Admiral Chris Barrie — chief of the Australian Defence Force from 1998 to 2002 — who commends the paper for laying “bare the unvarnished truth about the desperate situation humans, and our planet, are in.”

Thoughts?

Even without climate change, we've built a society with so many ways of accidentally or purposefully destroying ourselves that it'd be amazing if we can keep our shit together for a whole lot longer. Global warming just seems like it'll speed the process up and make it a pretty ugly finale.

Singularity.

There will be a global paradigm shift before 2050 which will be so fundamental that it defies prediction.

Stuff like this does not come as a surprise to me and, honestly, it’s difficult for me to conceive that it would surprise anyone or that there’s anyone out there who does not expect current civilization to breakdown sometime in the next 30-50 years. All one has to do is “play out the tape” of current policies and approaches and we find stuff like this.

It’s honestly astonishing to me that anything ever works at all, with how irrational and uninformed-yet-opinionated most people are. Get two or three human beings in a room and you could win money all day betting that they won’t be able to get all that far in solving problems or reach an agreement on things.

What made this civilization possible was the very notion of free thought and liberal values that the West somehow embraced. We don’t burn scientists at the at the stake anymore or kill people on the cutting edge of human thought. The standard of living around the world has risen over time as “a tide has risen all ships” but, unfortunately, the horizon looks dark and a crisis is looming in humanity’s future.

I don’t concern myself with this stuff much, though. I’m not even near misanthropic, either. I’m just a realist. Everything passes, civilizations come and go. The human story never seemed slated to in any way be romantic or idealistic. At best, it’s a comedy and at worst, it’s a tragedy. It is pretty damn incredible what we have done, though, over the past century. A small part of me hopes that we will figure this out and pull through, but I’m skeptical.

Maybe "civilization", but not the human race entirely. We're pretty resilient animals.

My guess is the rich will inhabit the most livable areas and the poor will fight wars for them under the guise of "patriotism" or some other religious bullshit.

I'm feeling this as well.

After you totally called the current fentynal crisis 16 freakin years ago, I can't bring myself to shrug off what you just said here.

And again, I'm feelin this too... I think we're already seeing the begining of this major shift tbh.

Good points. It seems you're slightly more pessimistic than me in terms of people working together. I've seen a whole lot of incredible and unexpected compromise occur within small groups. Any sort of power dynamics and/or outside influences can easily throw that off track though.

I'd think that allowing those who best understand the science to design and implement a solution without interference would be ideal, but politics and corporate bribery (known as lobbying in America) make it next to impossible.

Feeling how you do, what're your thoughts on bringing children into the world?

Absolutely, it has already begun and is well underway. The Universe is doing its thing and we get to take part in the Change.

Through the participation of billions of humans in the Internet, a hive mind of superhuman inteligence already exists today.

Why do you think we are akll glued to those screens like bitches?

We're awaiting the Next Stage in Evolution.

We are participating in something greater than us even by something as mundane as by laughing at cat picturs.

The Collectinve Unconscious is getting organized on the www.

People fetishize the Singularity as the point AI takes over and say "not yet" but its a cascade of paradigm shoifts throughout every field of our consciousness too and that cascade is HAPPENING NOW.

You won't be able to watch the ingularity through that little screen- the singularity will happen INSIDE OF YOU more than anywhere wlse.

Ben Shapiro once told his audience everything would be okay because people in affected areas would simply sell their house and move inland. Some people are incapable of understanding the various levels of idiocy of that statement. Imagine using those feeble minds for good, and mobilizing them towards change and progress, like acting against those who sold out the planet for their next yacht. Taking the money from those who've commited what truly are crimes against humanity and putting it towards solutions.

I agree with your post completely. Barring complete disaster, it'd be tough to wipe us out compeltely. There will always be that guy with a bunker and a warehouse full of spam and ramen. Hunter gatherers in the Amazon may end up moving to higher ground and being okay, or the 'civilized' people around them will seek help and over burden them to death. I do wonder how the ultra-rich will fare once money becomes meaningless. How will they pay to protect themselves and procure food?

What devastating blows?

Dont you think a mass extinction type event would be in every species best interest except ours? And even humanity would probably be better off in the long run.

Life is very tenacious. Apart from the earth actually breaking into pieces or getting swallowed by the dying sun, life will continue in some form or other

The problem is that it's already too late. Very few studies look into lag - the time between when an input is made and when the effect of that input is perceived. Like if you have a loose steering wheel. You turn it right and a second or two later your car agrees with your decision. We don't know if the warming being experienced now is the result of CO2 from 2018 or 1918. We just don't know.

There was a chance to stop this about 30 years ago but that never even got off the ground. The problem requires everybody in the world to agree on a plan of action and then do what they say they're going to do. That's never happened ever in the history of humanity. Not. Even. Once. If you're betting on a sudden realization that we've got to do something and we all step up and do our bit, that ship sailed long ago.

Part of the problem is that it's too big to get your head wrapped around. The paper OP references talks about this. The number of variables and how their responses effect changes down the line and how those changes affect other variables in this bizarre intertwined system of feedback loops is mind numbing. Try to explain that to some poor woman in Africa who never got past 4th grade and whose main concern is finding something for her kids to eat for dinner.

All of these papers/stories/books (and I read a lot) have this uncorn-farting-rainbows nonsense about "we've got to act in the next XX years and we can solve the problem." Bullshit. The problem is here now. Globally agriculture is starting to collapse. The weakening jet stream (predicted in like 1980) is allowing the less-cold-than-usual-but-still-fucking-cold air from the arctic to descend to the middle latitudes resulting in freezes/rains/snows/floods/tornadoes at a frequency and intensity never seen before. The central US has been so bad over the past few years and much worse this year that most of the corn and soybean crop is just not gonna get planted. Droughts all over the world. Killing heat in cities. Shit is getting real.

This has been known since the 1970s. Everybody in the "First" World is still driving gas guzzlers. They're still burning oil and gas to heat their houses and suffering through summers with the air-con dripping icicles. PLUS THE WHOLE REST OF THE WORLD REFUSES TO BE LEFT OUT OF THAT PARTY.

We are so fucked.

Sadly, my view is that we are going to ride this one into the ground and whoever's left will have to pick up the pieces and see if there's anyplace left to live. But then I'm an optimist so maybe it'll be worse.

My question for the group is can government fix the problem? Of course the ruling elite are quick to tell you how to live, but are they going to give up their lavish life style in the name of “global warming? Is Nancy Pelosi going to give up her chauffeured limousine for a ford festiva ? What has the government fixed in the last 20 yrs? I can’t answer that but I can tell you that the government that wants to fix ‘global warming” can’t even balance their budget.
