being in a civilization

In general terms, what is it that constitutes "civilization?" What achievements or accomplishments must be present before a people can be terms civilized? What general theories explain how and why civilization develops?

the definition seems to sum it up:
Civilization: An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions.

to go deeper I would say that civilization came from our knowledge that there is strength in numbers, people began gathering probably to be safer. Once a group gathers we would begin to share our ideas about the world and contribute what could be contributed for the sake of the group. Throughout time that group would eventually evolve as a whole because experience and knowledge is always being shared

I think civilization happened when tribes learned to communicate... Before that they would attack with out real reason, and fuck and breed in their family, once we learn to live together, we had less problems hunting, so we had more time for art, and inventing stuff, which makes the world go round. But as far as being polite, fuck that, if you don't say what's on your mind then nothing ever evolves, and when you stay where you are for ever, I think, it's the worst kind of death.
