a picture of a black hole would be fantastic, but that is not what has been offered, in fact it isnt even a picture of the event horizon, and in reality it isnt even a picture, visible light was not used to create the image, they used xray and microwave radiation to build a data set, that carefully crafted data set was then turned into pictures by algorithms, there was nudging and fudging all the way, the end result is scientifically worthless

Quote:
For more than a year they calibrated and corrected and reality-checked their data. Then in June, they released the final Sagittarius A* and M87 data to four small groups tasked with making images. Radio astronomers make images by feeding data about the radiation they have observed to algorithms that construct a picture of the object that emitted it. If the E.H.T. were an actual telescope the size of Earth, making images would be straightforward, the results unambiguous and direct. But because the E.H.T. is just a few specks of mirror on a rotating globe, an infinite number of possible images could explain any given data set. To be sure the images they extracted from their data depicted what was really up there in the sky, they installed checks and balances in the imaging process — hence the four separate groups. To avoid poisoning one another’s minds — so that no one could accidentally nudge another group into seeing a black-hole shadow that wasn’t really there — these groups worked in isolation, making images using different algorithms and techniques, trying hard to discredit anything that looked too sharp, too clean, too likely to be the product of wishful thinking.

Sure, its not a photo from the visual light spectrum but radio waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. For example, Xrays (part of the electromagnetic spectrum) are invisible to our eyes yet they are used for imaging bones in the human body.

Perhaps radio telescopes were used to "image" the black hole since black holes emitt no light due to the massive gravational pull of them?

the medical xray analogy doesnt work for one simple reason, source reference, in the medical image a specific known energy level and dispersion is used, the xrays are the known factor, conversely in the "black hole" image the xray intensity is not known, the shape of the mechanism producing the energy is unknown, the dispersion rate is unknown, output stability is unknown

basically their radio image without all the fancy processing is just a hot spot with no detail, completely worthless

Alright. I disagree with the "worthless" notion but I will say that in the future, better images may show this image as valid or totally bogus.

Im leaning towards valid at this point as its so close to Einsteins/Hawkings description of a black hole.

ok, well nevermind that the theory of black holes is a logical fallacy set up to brush aside concerns about observations that dont fit the theory of relativity

the first clue that this "science" is bunk is the starting premise, namely, to image a black hole

there is a lot of bias in that goal

real scientists would be interested in imaging whatever is in the center of sgr A

most modern astronomy revolves around fapping to a picture of einstein, so not science based in the least

anyone truly interested in the "black hole" picture should watch this ted talk, she explains in detail how confirmation bias was used to manufacture the image, pay close attention to the language she uses

The idea of a black hole results pretty directly from general relativity.  The prediction dates back to way before there was any evidence for them and the concept follows pretty easily from the observations that provided the motivation to develop theories special and general relativity in the first place.

so what? because someones pet theory is popular but has no evidence we should just whistle and move on? thats not how science works

as for evidence, wrong, there is no evidence for black holes, inference is not evidence, its conjecture

more inference, they started with a premise and worked toward that goal, that is not science, gravitational waves are ridiculous on the face, how can a force that acts instantaneously at a distance be trapped in a wave? preposterous, more fakery just like the CMB

It's not that general relativity is popular.  It's that every attempt to produce a result that violates general relativity produces results that fit the predictions of general relativity.  There's about a century's worth of experimentation to back it up.

categorically false, in fact just the opposite is true, stupid scientists claim to know how the universe works but then observations dont agree, only 5% of baryonic matter is understood, the rest of the theory is gobbledy gook about dark matters and blackened holes, neither of which can be found after decades of experiment

no there isnt, please, i implore you, post just one link to any science that isnt inference that confirms the standard model

There are also electrical engineers who believe that the Earth is flat and I've personally heard world renowned scientists say things that simply weren't true when they started lecturing outside of their expertise.  What's your point?  Also you do realize that you can actually go read the paper and see what sort of techniques they used to analyze the data, right?  They didn't just all get together in a conference room and decide that something would look impressive on their CVs.

Scientists don't claim to know everything, nobody has ever written anything about "blackened holes" and particle physics isn't especially concerned with general relativity since the distances and the masses are so small.  I'm really not sure why you're worrying about the standard model either.  And a lot of people working in particle physics and cosmology would actually be really happy if somebody managed to show that predictions from the standard model and general relativity were wrong.

If LIGO isn't recording Gravity Waves, then how do scientists record Gravitation?

I'm not sure what you mean.  LIGO is an interferometer.  It records the interference between two beamlines and, based on the properties of the interference, you can figure out some constraints for things like the masses of particles (which can be anything from a proton to a neutron star, in this context), their approximate dimensions and how to describe their motions.
