Not certain if it is technological transcendence or just a hesitance to develop that portion of the market
it is easy for me to criticize Canada's long history of sending our resources to a technologically backwards country like the US, only to turn around and buy the finished products back from them
but realistically, the US developed an entire market system in its time as a country, Canada has been content to ride coattails

but we have actually hit a sort of turning point with oil recently
Alberta churns up all sorts of crude oil
which they then ship to the US or other parts of Canada for refinement
but now so much crude is being pulled up, with pipelines to ship it elsewhere being obstructed by protests and legal cases
that the Alberta government is looking at opening a refinery to alleviate some of the load and process in province
which -should- add refinery jobs to the existing Alberta oil sector

calling the United States technologically backward was sarcasm pertaining to the fact that my point had been taken as my problem being exclusively with China
as was stated in the post you quoted, the United States has done a better job becoming a fully developed and self-sufficient country
while Canada has been riding coattails and leaving sectors technologically underdeveloped because we would sooner ship off raw materials

it is not just oil tho
we send the US wood products so we can build shit out of the refined wood products we then buy at inflated prices from the US
NAFTA sucked for Canada from a citizens point of view,
and if Trump can get a handle of his government to nail down his new trade agreement it's just going to suck for us in a different way
