First Shoe Boxes

So I tried out shoe boxes for the first time.

I used brf cakes shredded in a cheese grater as spawn.  I used 6 1/2 pint jars, split between 3 shoe boxes.  I didn't measure the coir so I'm pretty sure my ratio was between 3 to 1 and 4 to 1, then I put a coir casing layer on top.  I used bods bucket tech on coir. did squeeze test and got water.

It's been a couple weeks and the shoe boxes still doesn't look fully colonized.  I had them in a stack to start with and I think the weight of the shoe boxes on top made the lid seal tighter and slowed my growth on the bottom 2.  The top one has pins showing through the casing layer, but the shoe box doesn't look fully colonized.

Checking them out now they are really not level on top.  maybe shifted when I moved them around.  I have serious side pins on a couple.  All the shoe boxes showed condensation on the sides through whole process.

One has a funky patch of white growing on one side.  I'm going to try to post pics.  Any thoughts on how to improve next batch would be welcome.  I haven't been misting them.  Even boiling the water before use I had issues with contamination when I misted brf cakes directly.  Not sure what I'm doing wrong with that.

So an update.

Yields on first flush were kinda lame.  Had about 30 mushrooms per shoe box.  Came out to 5-6 g dried.

Second flush hasn't come in yet.  Looks like a lot of aborts maybe.  It's been cold as f*** here.  Temp on the shoe boxes is 65 right now.  I know that will slow growth, so I'm being patient.

I used too much coir, the shoe boxes never fully colonized.  The casing layer seems damp still, and I suspect they aren't getting enough FAE.  The cabinet I'm keeping them in has no air circulation so I'm modding some shoe boxes so the top dub tub has poly fill holes, to see if that helps.  I've seen bods plastic bag solution, but this should do something similar and lets me see what's going on.

Hopefully the second flush will come in.  In the meantime, my next set of spawn jars are almost ready, so I will do anther set with less coir and see if I get fully colonized and better yields.

Be happy!  These boards are full of threads where the result is complete failure.  You managed a successful project.  You will learn with time.

Your temperature is fine.  Mid to upper 60s will get the job done.

Your lower-than-expected yield is due almost entirely to using brf cakes, based on the assumption you started with spores.

Switch to agar, and use grains.  Your results will dramatically improve.  It’s very easy to do, don’t be scared of it.

This was a lot easier than getting into the Temple of the Winds, eh?

Thanks for the response. 

I didn't realize it mattered if you started with spores instead of agar.  I was seeing results of over 20 from a shoe box and wondering what I did wrong.

Guess I will be reading up on Agar.  Was hesitant to try, seems like it would be awfully easy to contaminate those agar circles with airborne contaminates.  And last year I had an awful encounter with trich.  Which is why the shoe boxes are in a cabinet that stays closed.  I just added a light in there.

Yes it was easier than entering the Temple of the Winds.  Also easier than turning the blade of the Sword of Truth white.  Thanks for getting the reference.  Time to do more research.

Hmm. Something sounds off about that. Thirty mushrooms only equaled 5 or 6 grams dry? That would mean each fresh mushroom was only between 2 and 3 grams. That would be really small for a full grown mushroom! Am I missing something?

No I believe him 100% because I'm in the exact same situation. My shoebox gave me 6g dry. I did 36 brf cakes spawned 4 to each shoe box. Every one gave me about 6g dry.

I've had the same results with 4 syringes now. Idk. It's infuriating.

Half of it is luck when it comes to using a multispore syringe. You have to hope that you get the best genetics. Sometimes you get amazing results and other times you'll hardly get sh-t lol. I'm using wild bird seeds and rye grass seeds for the first time. I'm not expecting much 😂.

Rot I would go with a different vendor. If that doesn't fix your problem then its probably your substrate.

I stand corrected. Idk man, I've had bad luck on my last 2 grows too. Rw and ape. Shit happens. After those 2 fails in a row I got my first pans to fruit. So, sometimes it's just luck.

Only thing is suggest like in that other thread would be more fae and more light. That's what it looks like they need to me.

I was checking out the strain thread.  This was from amazonian "strain" which have hollow stems.  And yes, the largest of the lot which was 5 inches long weighed maybe a gram after it was dried.  I'm getting some B+ and trying those.  Amazonian's are easy to grow but suck for bulk.  Live and learn.
