People might choose to go off grid because it is more cost effective. Biodiesel is a carbon neutral part of any respectable microgrid. You can use a smaller solar panel and only use the generator when you need it.

the best way to go off grid atm is solar and use a wood-gas motor generator for the down times. for this you would need a harvest able crop of something to burn. IDK about soy but many businesses will let you haul away stuff to put in the burner anything wood. i got a neighbor that powers his house off used oil from fast food places he pays 5$ per 50 gal of old oil. he has his f-250 converted and a generator for his house if he would build a battery back up he would be grid free.

An F250 is too massive of a vehicle for my taste. I ride a bike, but if I got a car, I would get an electric car, like the Bolt or the Leaf. I could charge the car with the diesel generator, and use the waste heat for heating and cooling my house.

It is true though, that if I were trying to charge an ebike I would probably want to make a little gasifier, because smaller generators are mostly gas.
