about an economic colapse

In the case of an extreme economic collapse along with maybe a collapse of the government. I was just wondering what would happen to people that had valuable jobs. For example I work in the oil field. If inflation skyrockets and money is worthless why would I keep working when I would need to be taking measures to survive. The oil companies have a valuable commodity so they will want workers. Would they have to keep up with inflation or offer other compensation for services. That's just one example. I'm sure there are many others.

If the government collapses, there wont be corporations anymore.  In that case the most valuable job would probably be farming.

Maybe but I don't see the demand for fuel going away just because of a collapse. There might not be corporations as we think of them but somebody will be getting the fuel out there.

Also your right about farming but how many people know how to farm with 19th century technology? I guess a small farm could work. I think I would be in a good position to form a group of people that could provide fuel for others. Barter system?

I'm thinking locally now. Having fuel would be a great advantage to people who wanted to maintain an area. Not only that but natural gas is a heating fuel source for many people. A lot of people would freeze without it especially without gas for a chainsaw. There will still be an immediate demand for fuel, like it or not.

I think there would be a tribal type of government system. There would have to be some sort of system like this for people to survive.
People with military experience would probably take power and control any commodities in a given area. So people with whatever expertise in those commodities would have value.

In the catastrophic collapse most people envision, the entire infratructure of the world goes downl:  The roads will deteriorate and become non-functional.  Electricity and power are wiped out.  There are no computers, no manufacturing plants and thus, no way to refine fuel, and no need for it.  With no supermarkets, food, or running water, fuel will be an afterthought.

Fuel does not necessarily have to be highly refined. If you know what your doing you can get usable fuel straight out of the ground. In the scenario you speak of there would massive amounts of death(not that that's a bad thing).

Farming is pretty hard.  Just growing some of my own food, I've learned there are pitfalls on top of pitfalls on top of self-made pitfalls that you can never account for before hand.


I wish it were as easy as just planting a couple seeds and you've got an over-crop of tomatoes, but there really is quite a lot of learning and experience that needs to occur before you can find any form of self-reliance food wise.

Shit, I even had some kind of fungus take over one section of my garden and someone tried to convince me that chemtrails caused it.....account for that!
