Buckets are a pain also trust me. Save yourself the trouble and get some 5-micron large spawn bags or x-large spawn bags off eBay.

I think he asked about growing on straw, not sawdust. I use straw buckets for growing oysters and sawdust blocks for growing the other species. I only have 1 barrel sterilizer, so the saturdays I run it for blocks and simultaneously I use another barrel with a basket to pasteurize straw. I fill each bucket with 7lb or so of wet straw and I get 2 or 2,5lb of oysters. I know sawdust is better and easy to work with but straw is cheap, ready available, easy to inoculate (pasteurized sub) and doing buckets you don't throw a lot of plastic to the landfill. Unless you're growing at a serious commercial level, I wouldn't recommend growing oysters on sawdust bags, I think it is a waste of expensive filter bags, and not-eco friendly.

Related to bags, I would recommend 0,5 micron.
5 micron bags aren't for spawn unless you incubate them on a clean room. Still, I don't recommend 5 micron filter bags as they lose a lot of air when trying to mix them.

I think the title of the thread is self-explaining , as you said, no one is going to use a laundry basket for hwfp. Poly tubing either (only saw it being used by Wild Branch farm to do the non treated hwfp cold incubation method).

And yes, you're right about the master mix recipe. I didn't said otherwise. What I'd mean is for some people (me included) is very hard to get soy bean hulls (I use wheat bran and sun dried spent coffee grounds) but also hardwood sawdust and chips are a treasured substrate for me, so I keep them for more rewarding crops. I prefer using locally available and cheap barley straw for oysters (except for eryngii), as it gives me nice harvests too, and as I said before, I save money using reusable buckets instead of expensive filter bags that need to be sterilized and inoculated in sterile/aseptic enviroment.
