Beautiful form and color!
When you posted the pictures, is that when you took the pictures? In other words, is this the beginning and we have more to come?

Hey now! Those do look really good. I love growing oysters outside! Mine look exactly like that when grown outside...

a lot different color and texture wise than my indoor ones. It doesn't seem to be so closely related to temperature as it usually is indoors. These were growing at about 80F+.
Is it all FAE???

Oh yeah, Are you weighing them for any idea of yields?

I've always assumed it was the cooler temperature that was the major factor leading to meatier fruits outdoors. Apparently, light and FAE are major components as well. I know when I grow them indoors, they're much lighter in weight and color.

I have no way to determine yields. Hear are more pictures 24 hours later. And A second one. Which is the same just spawn and straw but no net. The first one I put a net in it to keep it more uniform bad idea. it got in the way of the fruits so I had to cut it as they formed.

The second one got blown off a trash can so it got torn up pretty bad. But is recovering I got one bail of straw and the rest of the spawn went to the rest of the straw. Outdoors on the ground.
I will post the results of this in the spring.

The flies didn't hurt anything. Besides, the bugs crawl out when you fry them. All outdoor mushrooms have bugs. They're normal. RR

Give them a salt water soak for 24 hours; this makes the crawlies die and float out.
The ones that don't are just extra protein.

WOW!!! Bitchin' indeed!!! I have a question though, I hope Roger or someone else can answer about Pearl Oyster cultivation. I've had success with straw, but it turns out I'm pretty darned allergic to straw. Very hard for me to handle (bad rash) or breath, so the process of pasteurizing straw is very problematic for me.
I saw Alder chips (very thin shavings) as well as Alder shreds (very fine, short strings) in PetCo for use as animal and snake bedding. No preservatives according to the label. Pretty cheap, too. Could I possibly use these as bulk substrate (colonizing from grain) to avoid the horrible effects I get from being near and working with straw?? Which would be preferable, the chips or the shreds??
Would I need to supplement the Alder shreds/chips with bran or something else?
Thanks, N.B.

Of course you can use them!
The shreds are going to colonize faster but fruit for a shorter time, the chips visa-versa

Andrew: Thanks for the prompt response! I'll swing by Petco tomorrow and buy a package of each...one for immediate gratification, and one for the long term! I have 6 quarts of rye grain fully colonized and ready to go.
Just cooked the last of my straw-grown Pearls this evening for my wife - she loves the way I prepare them. Since she has no objection to my expanding the volume of my home-grows, the key for me is finding a suitable substrate that I can work with without the cutaneous and respiratory misery that straw gives me.
Once I get a solid tek down pat for Oysters, I'd love to try Shitake and then Pioppino mushrooms (Agrocybe aegerita).
Aside to Roger: ...love your video. Your pix of the Oysters in the laundry basket from this past spring are an inspiration...absolutely astounding!!!!
Andrew..again my thanks for the quick response. I love the knowledge base here and really appreciate the willingness to share info. I look forward to being experienced enough to offer good advice instead of always asking for it!
My best to all, N.B.
