Mono tub issues
    #25657450 -

Having monotub issues. When I create gen3s in coco verm monotub I'm getting a lot of green mold and cotton mold. Can someone walk me through their tek in detail at this stage.

I'm putting my coco verm in a big industrial boiler for two days with a night of cool off in between. I transfer to clean totes and let cool.

Then I put clean liners into clean tubs and seal off the holes with clean tape. I finally had fruits when I did the lid upside down but have been doing latched on recently.

I've only had a few successful tubs. This is the stage where I get the most contamination. What am I doing wrong? What can I measure or change to fix this?

It's probably your spawn. You can dump clean spawn in unpasteurized coir and get fruit.

A lot of the genetics I'm working with are old..been making new stuff with agar and making gen 2s of that and they're doing well. Haven't gotten to gen 3 yet of those genetics tho.

Agreed. You can sneeze booger’s into your coir with no issues provided your spawn is axenic.

Good to know. I'll work on making more gen 1s with the new genetics

I agree with probably being spawn, but can u elaborate on some details, spawn ratio, water content in mix,etc

What temp to you run your boiler? I’ve read post of ppl saying coir can be sterilized but I still think pasteurization is better I get my sub core temp to 160F and hold for 12 hours in a slow cooker my water holds a perfect 162F so no part of my sub is partially sterilized. I’ll then let it set in the ziplock a few days to build up microbe count. In the last 6 months I’ve pasteurized like this I’ve never had a tub contam I just throw them out to make room after 3 flushes. (The micro build works great for casing too)

8 pints of spawn per tote. I'm not really measuring the the coco or verm tho. Basically a layer a few inches thick. And I dont that honestly know what temperature it's getting to in there. It runs for eight hours, cools a day runs another eight hours. Cools over night then I drain it and let it get to room temp in a clean tote. Then I make my tubs.

Also is there any way to check mold spots? To add something to stop them in their tracks from spreading?

Salt can hold it in check for a day or two if you are looking to finish a flush. But if you don’t have pins yet there is no point as the mold will eat through the substrate before it can do anything.

Just picked up a croc pot. What's a good measurement of coir for a 7qt croc pot. Should I add verm or gyp? What temp am I looking for and for how long?

Mix ur coir to field capacity then load into 2 gallon ziplock set in pot fill with water set at 160f once ur CORE temp hits 160f hold for at least 1 hr

Trying a croc pot tester batch. Got ziplock bags in the crock pot taped up and at a good moisture level inside. I have water around them and just put on high. And am shooting for keeping the coir at 160 for an hour. Am I missing anything?

U have dirty spawn dude... I make my coir with warm tap water sometimes and it's fine.

I think ur making it too wet. And do u mix ur spawn with the coir? Or do u layer it?

Yeah this new stuff is all fresh genetics. I think that's what my problem was.

Got a few trials rn. 1 batch with crock potted coir. 1 of the same with a casing. And two like that but done in the boiler. I'm crossing my fingers. They're gonna to stay in the dark for 10 to 14 days (that sounds right, right?) And then they'll get lights

In my very limited experience doing a bucket tek has worked best for me for coir. What i do is approx 160 F water for coir, 650g brick 3.5 quarts water. Then place that in a rubbermaid bucket which also i fill with 160 F water as insulation jacket. Cook the coir like this for 3to 4 hours. No dramas whatsoever. Only when suspect jars are used i get issues.

I have done cow dung, straw n coco mixture same way (only twice) and the results were still good.

Out of interest whats the temperature of the insdutrial boiler you r using?

Coir doesn’t need to be pasteurized it needs to be cooked. Bucket tek is the easiest way to do it. Proper pasteurization is a waste with coir, hell the biggest reason people use coir is because you don’t need to pasteurize it.

Gotcha. Thank you.

So most of the new totes are looking great..but one that I did the casing layer on has cob webs mold on the top of the casing. It wasn't there last night but now it is. Should I just toss that one?
