Best animated movies. * 2
    #25573990 -

I recently re-watched Shrek 2 and it's genuinely the best and most hilarious animated film I've seen ever. Better than the original Shrek. Absolute classic. As a grown ass man, I found myself laughing way harder than I should have throughout a majority of the movie. Shrek is love. Shrek is life.

What's your favorite animated films and why? I need to build up my watch list for when I go offline for the next couple of months.

There are so many great ones, including a lot of crazy anime movies. Here's a list in no particular order:

Heavy Metal (1980)
Akira
Paprika
A Scanner Darkly
South Park, Bigger Longer And Uncut
Tekkonkinkreet
Ghost In The Shell
Wizards (1977, also all the other Bakashi films)

Lupin The Third, especially the older movies. Castle Of Cagliostro was directed by Hayao Miyazaki and is the most wholesome Lupin film by far, Secret Of Mamo is more goofy/trippy and mature. The 2 most recent specials were also great.

Redline
Genocidal Organ
The Triplets of Belleville
Soul Music & The Weird Sisters (Terry pratchett book adaptions)

So many other great films it's hard to think of them all.

Heavy Metal is the greatest movie of all time

I say this because it is unbelievably well scored and has a great outer plot following a compelling thread through several stories related only by that thread.

I'm not a tots guy but anyone who likes dem anime titties is also in for a shock

There some buff black man nudity in it for you, Zaid

the cheesing/major boobage episode of south park is a parody of the film

Miyazaki movies are almost all amazing

Yeah heavy metal is great, awesome soundtrack and super classic animation. If you haven't checked out any of the Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant magazine you really should as well, all the stories from the movie are from the magazine and some are much longer in comic form I believe.

Plus they published a ton of other crazy stuff over the decades: https://archive.org/details/heavy-metal-magazine?&sort=date

They have just under 90~ issues collected on that site, and you can find some online elsewhere.

Here's a comic about the Captain Stern guy from the movie: https://readcomiconline.to/Comic/Captain-Sternn-Running-Out-of-Time

The comic is fairly different, and much better IMO. Though I haven't read any of the other ones with him, but that one is great. It involves addictive soda laced with narcotics, zombies, time travel, dinosaurs, and a lot of other great stuff

That's awesome! I have one issue of the mag but I plan to collect them all. The first one is 400$ IRL. Thanks for the link and great idea to check them out online.

I’ve only got to see My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, & Ponyo of the Ghibli films, but they’ve all captured my heart in a way no other film has

The Yellow Submarine movie is also great; I got it on DVD when I was still pretty young, so I only ever watched it sober until back in March of this year when we ate some sour patch kids with acid dropped on them. Needless to say, we watched it like 3 times in a row and it was fucking amazing. Having incense burning in front of the screen definitely made it better. But trying to watch it sober again just isn’t the same...

Fantastic Planet (1973) (english dub is best)
Alice in Wonderland (1951)

Fantastic planet is so fucking trippy and the soundtrack is awesome.  I actually just discovered it recently and think it would probably be a top choice to watch on psychedelics.

Incense in front of the screen sounds cool.

I've always wanted to collect the magazines too but they are rare and expensive (at least some are)

SoulSeek has comics/books as well as music, and I searched for Heavy Metal Magazine and sure enough there is a lot available! Downloaded all the 77-85~ issues :awesomenod:

Also some of the stories they published over the years have been collected and published individually, mainly the more popular/famous ones. But you can find a lot online, Moebius has some epic sci fi/fantasy, The Incal and Moebius Library are both incredible.

Been meaning to watch Fantastic Planet for awhile now, along with Ghandahar:

Gandahar - Light Years 1988

It has a somewhat similar style of animation. Both are French sci fi films though Ghandahar is based on a novel.

I wish I could give more input on the films suggested, but I haven't seen any of them except for the South Park movie, Ice Age, Finding Nemo and Shake Tale. The meat and potatoes of my childhood viewing experience. I really need to expand my horizons, so thanks for the suggestions! There goes another 20GB on my hard drive.

Yellow Submarine was weird for me. I just came out the other end of the movie thinking "what?". It all seemed like an attempt at just being trippy than a real surreal piece of artwork. Maybe I need to watch it again.

Also I always forget about Miyazaki movies! People have been urging me to watch all of them for the last 5 years.

Yellow Submarine and the biggies by Studio Ghibli.

The first Toy Story film was pretty good too, but infinitely more tame than what I just mentioned.

The animated hobit is great, then there is the Bakashi LOTR film, and a 3rd animated Return Of The King movie. All 3 are by different groups I believe but sort of form an unofficial animated trilogy.

Not sure if I have watched the 3rd one yet. Might be time to rewatch them all :strokebeard:

I feel like no one ever talks about ‘Mirrormask’.  It’s live action integrated with animation, probably 85% animated.  Really awesome movie with great visuals.  Here’s the trailer:

Also, try ‘Coraline’ or ‘Nine’.
